New case mod, but dunno what to say...

I had just installed a 120mm blowhole on my rig, and DAMN IT IS LOUD! https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/08/2.gif Mutes out the sound of my Delta 60mm and all my other fans! (hell, I had to crank my amp a few notches, -65dB to -62dB, just to hear it!) Must be that it moves 106CFM of air at 42dBA https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/4.gif

Although, I just happened to notice that my temp for my CPU has risen a few degrees. Huuuurh? I'm now getting 41C as we speak and I'm running SETI@home, AOL, Winamp (Trance Nation America 2 Disc 2. God I love trance https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif), and Opera 5 (with 3 windows open). Under these condtions, I got 37C without the fan. That means, no AC and with a window open, 70-so degrees F outside.

Anyone care to explain why I'm getting a slightly higher temperature? Could it be that ASUSProbe is going pear-shaped with me?

Temperature readings: 32C Idle, 36C Full load (SETI@Home)

Simply having more fans won't necessarily make your case cooler. If the airflow created by two or more fans conflicts, it will create a turbulent spot inside your case that can impede airflow. Fan placement is primarily about aerodynamics, not number or size of fans.

I hate to tell you this after you've cut up your case, but I don't think blowholes are necessary. If you have ample ventilation holes in the bottom front of your case, and if you have a PSU that draws in air from both the front and bottom (front being the side that faces your CD drive), you should have good cooling. Add a second fan to the space provided at the rear of the case, and you'll be golden. I'd also recommend round IDE cables, because flat ribbons can block airflow.

Other tips to reduce heat: Make sure you have adequate space between your cards (my sound card is three slots below my video card, and my ethernet card is too small to be of consequence). Rather than buying a second HDD and having two HDD's generating heat in your case, just upgrade to a larger drive so that you only have one running. The extra money you spend on the larger HHD will be saved in cooling costs.

Yes, but my PSU only has one exhaust fan (faces out), and I've only got 2 other fans (80mm, exhaust and intake in the standard locations), excluding the blowhole. I haven't gone totally crazy with fans.

I only put in the blowhole just to eliminate the "hotspot" on top. Lots of heat builds up there, so I'd might as well get rid of it.

One output fan in your PSU is okay, as long as the PSU has air inlet holes on the front and bottom.

Did you say that the blowhole was 120mm? Maybe that's too big. A smaller fan up there might be able to draw out that heat without competing with the primary front-to-back airflow. Just a thought.

I read on AMD's site that even a front fan can in some cases decrease cooling efficiency. Try disconnecting the blowhole fan and front fan, and see what your system's temperature is. Then add only the front and see if it makes a difference. By experimenting with one additional fan at a time, you'll be able to see which fan arrangement works best in your system's case.

Please let us know your results. I'm getting a new case soon that will have a intake on the front and exhaust on the back but I've been struggling with whether to add a blow hole or not.

If your 120 mm blow air direct on CPU with that big CFM it will stop the CPU fan to spinn corectly and this will diminuate your Heatsink CFM and the result is high CPU temp.
Try to fit a 120 mm with 60 CFM or 69 CFM Max for a CPU blow . The 69 CFM hawe only 1500 RPM and 30 Dba wich is very quiet .

As for rounded IDE cables, it's WAY more fun to rip them up manually and then duct tape them to wherever on the case. That'll help with airflow and will cost you the $.10 for the duct tape.

That certainly freed up space for airflow inside your case, but pulling off all that duct tape when you upgrade is going to be a pain in the butt.

You are all missing the most simple solution.

RHEOSTATS!!!

I have 4x80mm, 2x40mm and 2x120mm fans
not to mention the 80mm on the CPU

BUT I have rheostats on all of them, and there is NO added noise by the fans anywhere! This is because I keep most of them at 50% airflow except when my case gets warm.. when i just turn them up enough to exhaust the excess heat and then back to normal lower lvls.

RHEOSTATS!!! Sheesh!
