Haven't bought a new console since SNES, what to get now?

I haven't got a new console since the SNES, I now have it hooked up to the TV and it's still some great fun. I haven't planned to get a new console, thinking I don't need one. But now when prices have dropped so I can get one for under $300, it's tempting.

But I don't really know which console to get.

X-box: Want it becasue it's the best on the tech sheet, but I consider it to be a small computer so it feels like I don't need it since I already have a real computer to play games on.

Gamecube: Want it because it's there I can play all of my old favorite game series, Mario, Zelda, Metroid and so on. But I'm afraid that the magic this series had on the NES/SNES is gone now, when it's all new and shiny, 3D and that stuff, that these games will be just all the others.

PS2: Doesn't really have anything that stands out to me, except having the most games, it's clearly #3 to me if I'm going to buy one.

So, basically, I'm deciding between the Xbox and GC, based on what I've wrote here, which one do you think I would get the most fun from, if I should buy one at all?

RIGHT NOW...

i would get the Gamecube cause the price is right and there are good games out (Resident Evil) and alot of killer games coming out very soon....


but i might also want to wait a bit until the PS2 price drop and then get all the great classis at their "Best Hits" pricing (Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2, GranTurismo 3, Grand Theft Auto 3, THPS3, Devil May Cry, Soul Reaver 2, etc)

i really see no reason to get an xbox

I like the X-Box, it has Halo for crying out loud! Also Dead or Alive 3 can be pretty fun, and with graphics to die for. I love my x-box, it's so pretty! :D

I'd get a Gamcube or a PS2.

If you'd really love those old school SNES games then definatly go with Gamecube . It'll have all those sequels and such.

And right now there are some awesome games like Resident Evil out .

Yes, that's why I would pick a GameCube, solely for those games. I don't know if will appreciate them as much as I still enjoy playing the old games, now when it's 3D and so much more complex than in the days of SNES. Maybe the 2D scrolling and the game being easy compared (of course I didn't considered them easy at that time) to today's standards, is what still makes it so fun today, I'm afraid I won't like the new titles, therefore my only reason for buying a GameCube goes away.

Hm, this is going to a tough choice, thanks for the input people and keep it coming!

Well, more games are coming. I read that there should be 200 different games for the x-box here in Europe in christmas or something. And if you buy the DVD kit you have a great DVD player too, which I think is real nice :)

The choice is yours though..

Seriously though, Id wait a bit, theres nothing really great out for X-box or GCube except for 2 or 3 games, and the playstation 2 hasnt had any really great games that ive played (cept for Grand Turismo 3 of course). But personally i like x-box if I had to get one its got Jet Set Radio. Halo. That car game where you carsh into junk. And other good games.

PS2 is the way you should go. XBox has nothing for it and Gamecube is a kiddie machine.

I dont see what the big deal about Resident Evil is, all they did was spruce the graphics up and it is the same game. Go rent it and beat it.

And remeber on the PS2 you can play old PS games on it. I bought mine at launch a few years ago and have been happy with it. But i know you like the old school Mario, Zelda etc. Zelda would have been really cool but they made it even more kiddie rather than keep the more adult looking Link. Nintendo needs to just make games and get out of hardware.

Gamecube: I only played this briefly in the local Game where I played Luigi's mansion, some jet boat one and watched Star Wars avidly. It's got good graphics and the controller moulds to your hand pretty well but not as well as the Ps2 or xbox, in my opinion. It has some great games now with more on the way, plus it's a steal with the price tag (only £129 here).

Playstation 2: Started off with crummy launch titles (abeit Timesplitters and SSX). Has DVD support out of the box (I'm not sure whether Gamecube does...). It's got the broadband service coming soon with the add-on hard drive, and this should apprently be ready for when Final Fantasy 11 comes out. There's a pletora of games available now, with quite a catalogue of good ones (loads of bad ones as well though!)

Xbox: I got mine earlier today so haven't had masses of playing time but from what I've played, I love it. Halo is of course the current main attraction, and is an amazing game, but you don't want a console for one game now, do you? On the bright side then it also some decent launch titles, Dead or Alive 3 is graphically superb (The aqarium is a class level...the detail in the background alone is stunning), Munche's Oddysee is pretty fun and has got some high scoring reviews (and now it's in 3D! Yay!). There's DVD support, but you need to buy the DVD remote for it to work (which is a shame, and quite costly just to add DVD support to the already quite hefty price tag (over here it's about twice as much as a Gamecube)

Let me clarify some of that. GameCube is aimed at kids. How about that.

Yes there games are creative and different but Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin and the usual Star Wars game that graces every system does not make a system. Yes the games are pretty and usually very different but Nintendo launched too few games and ports over old games onto their system later. I owned Nintendo systems. I gave up after waiting 3 years for the N64. I bought my SNES because i was loyal. It opened up the RPG world to me but i was hit hard with lack of sports games.

PS2 is good, X-Box has nothing for it but will be ok but Nintendo is Nintendo. They will sell a billion Link, Metroid and Mario games and thats all they have to do.

The question was what system to buy. If you like Zelda and mario then by all means get a Gamecube. If you want Halo and cant wait for it to come on the PC then get a X-Box. If you want to play DVD's on one of them buy a PS2 or X-Box (Buy the controller for X-Box to unlock it). PS2 has more games, better games, and a backward compatibility with older ones.
Do i dislike Nintendo? Not really i just think that they target their market and stay at that market. Instead of developing games for their users over the years they stuck with the 5-15 year old bracket and that was it. Sony saw the older gamer or the one who grew out of nintendo and went for it but also kept some kids games around.

I am one of those odd people that had a Console and a PC most of my life. Most people dont have that for some reason. Nintendo makes great games and they make money but if you want a wide spectrum of games then get a PS2 or X-Box. If you want the Nintendo only games then get it.

Xbox is my choice. Games like Halo, Ralisport Challenge (best racing game I've ever played), Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding (best snowboarding game I've ever played), DoA3, plus, many, many more due out later this year and watch the E3 announcments. Very impressive. There's more Xbox games coming out in the near future that I'm interested in than PS2 and Gamecube combined.

You stick to a worthy argument, but a lot of people still find Super Smash Brothers and other games pretty fun. Try some of them.

Heh my SNES is the only system I have left... sold all the rest in favor of keeping my game fetish limited to PC's.

But I'd go with the X-Box. Their list of third party developers looks very promising and programmers actually *enjoy* coding on it. Why? Because it IS a PC essentially and any major programmer out there was brought up coding for PC's. Plus, I hear that the PS2 and its Emotion Engine is a bizatcho to program for.

I agree with the Gamecube concerns. Metroid, SMB and Zelda were glorious in their 2D days and seeing them in 3D gives me aneurysms. I really liked how Konami stuck to old skool with Castlevania: Symphony of the Night by staying 2D on the PS1.

3D..? This is nothing new, am I supposed to be impressed? It's all about fun dammit.. FUN. DAMMIT I WANT MY FUN. :mad:

the only reason i see for calling the gamecube a kiddie machine is if your friend buys the *** *** purple one (which no one i know has)

i would personally go with ps2 though

i would go for the ps2 because of its wide selection of games. xbox doesnt have much games that really stand out and the gamecube is aimed at a younger audience. unless your going to carry your console alot, buy a gamecube but my recommendation is ps2 :D

Thanks for all the opinions people, it does help me! :) If I'm going to get a console, it's most likely it will be a X-box. I figured out that the reason why I want a Gamecube is that I want more of the gameplay that Zelda, Super Metroid and Mario had for the SNES, and I don't think the new Zelda/Metroid/Mario games will give me that. Sure, it will me more of the good, since it's the sequels, but it won't be the same, and that is what I'm looking for.
