I need a new single player FPS. Unreal 2 looks awesome, but I haven't talked to anyone who's played it through. It's $32 at Newegg, should I get it?

I have been told that it is rather short, good, but not as good as it was expected. Not many FPS games out there right now.
I played the game a while back, you must remember that I have not played the original Unreal before, so I found the game to be quite challenging;) but short:( (finished it in 'bout 3 days of intense gaming - I'm not very good at gaming:o but I try!). I liked it for the beautifully rendered environment (got killed a few times while I stood admiring the view, Hehehe :o :p )
It's all good when it's Unreal :)
I replied "Yay" but I don't know if the game is worth 32 bucks. I haven't played through the first game, but what I've seen so far I like. It's definetly "not bad" but I don't know if it worths 32 bucks to play. If it was cheaper then I'd grab it in a second.
Play the demo then make a decision. Personally, I thought the demo level sucked. The Elite Force II demo, however, was alot of fun...:)
Unfortunately, the didn't release a demo for Unreal II, only Unreal Tournament 2003.Quote:

Unreal II is amazing, yeah it's a bit on the short side ... but then again that's on the easy setting (how many people actually play a new game on anything but easy?). You can overlook the shortness of the game because it is beautifully made, and you'll probably end up dying a couple of times while you're admiring the scenary.
Ugh, that would ruin the entire game for me. You gotta have the challenge first!Quote:

Well, I decided to order the game a few minutes ago. I figure with the amount of time I have to play games, I won't be done until next year anyway ;) Plus it looks awesome, I don't hear anything explicitly terrible about it, not many other choices in that type of game, and not to mention you guys voted Yay :D.
Thanks for the help :)
Sure they did. :)Quote:

Didn't you find it too damn long at loading the levels? WoOo that was pretty boring
There is a demo! I just found it on Fileshack:
http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=2812
Too bad I already ordered the game
I just hope I like it.. should have the demo in about 10 minutes :)
Darn it, I shouldn't have played the demo. Now I can't wait to play the actual game...
This is the first game I have ever played which I can't stand at 1024x768. I don't know why, but 1280x960 is the minimum res that I can stand in this game... it just looks ruined at anything lower, if that makes any sense...
I can't stand low rez either. It's always 1600x1200 for my games... and thats on a Ti4200.Quote:

Man! That's really quite hi resolution.;) How the heck can you manage that on a Ti4200 ( a great card, but still...), and at 1600x1200:eek: Any tweakin' skill to pass on?:) I game at 1024x768 on both my rigs, and with Unreal II I get a slight lagging in one particular scene (probably driver issue) - with AA, AF and all eye candy set to max!:DQuote:

I'm not sure about a Ti42000 but Unreal 2/2003 is mostly CPU limited on my modded 9500np. In 2003 I get 51.42fps botmach at 1600x1200 and 53.38fps at 640x480!!Quote:

Eric
DHOH! :o I forgot, I played Unreal II on my old rig, a POS XP2000+ (no offense to all XP2000+ owners, just my BAD experience with it) and my 9700Pro, still it shouldn't have lagged with that rig though.:) Whenever things like this happen I console myself by saying that it's driver related (talk about being self-delusional:p )Quote:

Well I found the game at Wal-Mart for $29.22. They decided to drop the price from $50 like 3 days after I order it, but I bought it anyway and cancelled my Newegg order.
So far it's pretty kickass. Using the rig in my sig @ 1280x1024 2xAA no AF and it looks awesome and plays completely smooth. I'm happy with the purchase.
Here's my take on the game. Gameplay is pretty standard shoot-em-up FPS style, but as you progress they spice things up enough to keep it interesting. I really like the defensive units, which manage to throw a strategic angle in on some of the levels. While I could ask for more weapons, the limited number you are given have a variety of functions which keeps weapon selection broad.
The graphics are, undoubtebly, impressive. While I'm not one to put graphics over gameplay, I also hate playing a game that looks like it was made overnight. And the more realistic the environments, enemies and objects the easier it is to get sucked into the game. Compared to most of the games I have played until now, graphics get a 9/10.
The only drawback to the game so far is the scripting and acting. While most of the dialogue is bearable, and actually humorous at points, the voice acting is AWFUL. And you're exposed to it right away. On the first level there's a guy trapped under a door, being torn up by some creatures on the other side. When you enter the room he shouts "Thank god! Help me!" (or something along those lines) and it sounds like he's completely calm and cool!! It's ridiculous, the guy should be screaming his head off! There are a number of times when I rolled my eyes at the dialogue, but it wasn't all that bad.
Oh, and that Aida chic has a pretty funny shirt. But, I guess she's just your standard issue scantily clad sidekick babe ;)
I don't know if the game is short or not, I've played maybe 5-6 hours total and right now I'm on the rooftop defending some scientist who is trying to activate an old radio. I certainly hope the end isn't too near, or I will be fairly disappointed in the game length. I'm playing on 'normal' though.
I also can't wait to dive into the editor, and I haven't looked around but I'm hoping there are some quality levels out there from the UT community I can play.
edit: Oh, and I found another game inside a game that's pretty challenging. While waiting for a scientist to do something I tried jumping on his head; well, you bounce off right away but with some patience and timing you can get a few bounces in. My record was seven bounces... beat that!! :D
Then they released the demo after the game released.Quote:
I'd have to say Get Something else. Unreal2, as you've heard several times, is really short, and boring IMO, since it was mission based. Unlike Unreal 1, where you were stuck on a planet, with lots of open spaces and levels, Unreal 2 brings you back to your ship after each mission. Instead I highly Recommend Vietcong. Excellent story and graphics. If you have a nice sound setup with EAX, it makes it even noticably better.
EDIT: Sorry, didnt read the entire post, indicating you already purchased it. Vietcong is still a great game to think about though.
By far my biggest complaint about Unreal II isn't the length, although it was a little short, but rather the scripted dequences. There is absolutely no way to skip them. You have to sit there through all of them and just wait.
I understand the mission briefing information the first time through, since you need to know what it is you need to acomplish. However, I think it may affect replay value because now that you know what you want to do, you don't want/need to go through it all again, but you have no choice.
32$ sounds like alot for a old game like Unreal 2. I bought a 3 cd game pack with Quake, Quake 2 and Quake3 Arena for $19 Canadian($12 U.S) from a bargain bin.
Well I'm enjoying Unreal II so far so I'm not too upset about my purchase. I was checking out Vietcong, but I haven't really heard anythign about it (or looked, for that matter). If Unreal II is as short as it's made out to be, I might be picking that up sooner rather than later :)Quote:

Agreed. You can skip some of the sequences, but the in-game scripts you're pretty much stuck with.Quote:

That's pretty cheap. But Q3 is quite a bit older than Unreal II isn't it?? I've had Q3 for ages, it was $30 like a year ago or something IIRC.Quote:
