What parts have you stolen from the family computer?)...

K ive been the family's pc geek since i was a kid and now just built one of my sisters a rockin gaming machine(2500barton, 9800pro, 2x512mushkin dimms, asus board etc. etc...)now...im getting rdy to buy a new cpu(im runnin a 2400)and am thinking of the 2500+ cause it seems to be OC'ing so well for so many of you.


So im up vacuming the house today and(yes i live with my Sis who is an RN and makes pretty good money..75k a yr and im the loser brother who makes 35k a yr. living in the basement..who plays games at night with his nephew and is a good role model.=)

so i stroll by her room and look at her nifty new comp i just built her...ok i cant take it anymore!...IM GONNA OC THAT MUTHA!..so i boot up and go into the bios and hock the FSB to 200 and hit F10 and reboot...


It boots up as a 3200+!!!!

with stock cooling!
Boots into windows(XP Pro)and seems to run fine for about 20min..and get this guys..when i put it together i talked her into getting a radeon 9800 non pro cause she plays Daoc and needs a good card under the hood.
I pick up the card for her which cost 299.00 and it ends up being a 9800...PRO!.....anyhoo..so shes running a 3200+ stock and im thinking of picking up a 2500+ tomorrow and coming home and see'ing what it can do in my rig.

Heres my guilty question?...If mine isnt a good OC'er like hers seems to be..im going to snag her mushkin memory and CPU and replace them with my NO NAME BRAND 2.5cas ram and cpu and she will NEVER know the difference..(ooh..im so going to hell!)

How can you be a good role model if you do that :D :D Plus if you get caught.. Yeah I know its a long shot.. But she might walk in on your with a screw driver to her case :D.. But then you will have no place to live :D

The reason im even thinking about doing this NOW is they went camping for the weekened and im home(cause i couldnt get off work)alone holding down the fort...mwa hahahah!(evil laugh....cough.)

Yes just do it.. she won't lose anything by it..

She's playing DAOC, definitely I'd do it. If she was playing games that would even come close to using all that power I'd say don't, but DAOC runs smooth as glass on a P3 1.0Ghz with a Radeon 7200, she doesn't need all that power. If she's an MMORPG lover though you may have to give the stuff back should she decide to start playing Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest 2 or World of Warcraft, but until then get the stuff outta there.

I know it's tempting, but how do you think she would respond if she found out that you did it? After all, she paid money for those parts.
How you you feel if someone snagged stuff out of your computer (let's say you didn't notice the difference in performance)?

I'd say do this:
Present this to her- explain why you want to do this, and explain the fact that she wouldn't notice the difference, while explaining the reason why you don't just overclock her system for her own benifit....There is a reason right? I'm sure she'd be happy with the extra performance too....

You shouldn't steal from your own blood...that's just not right..
Ask her and see what she says. If she says yes, then you have no guilty concience. If she says no, then cough up the dough, and buy your own stuff. After all, you're making 35K a year (which is 10K more than me), and you probably don't have (much?) rent to pay. You can afford it....

You could at least change the videocard out if it's the same one. I doubt your sister will be modding or O/Cing it :-P

It's not really stealing. I would call it trading, although some of the parts may be a little bit lower in value.

I would get the 2500+ and overclock it and see what it will do, then if you think it is not a good overclocker. Go and explain the situation to your sister and see if she will trade out.

wow, nice life. You're gonna steal parts of your sister's comp that she paid for with her own money so you can overclock more? Why would you steal from your sister....i'm sure if you just ask her she will trade ram with you.

I'm just saying his sister seems kind enough to let him live in her basement, I'm sure she wouldn't object to supporting his overclocking.

Ya same here, I'm on a POS p3 500. My system will be so much faster. She PAYED for that system with HER money, if you steal parts she worked for and replace them with junk, that is very low of you and is downright disgraceful.

but there would be no performance defecit to her. so is it really disgraceful? or it it merely naughty and cheeky? I'd go with the later.. besides he built it.. I'd swap.

Just tell her you swapped a few components and that if she notices the comp is ACTUALLY slower then she can have them back. Maybe take her out to lunch or something to compensate a bit financially.:D

Technically, I'm on the family machine right now. But....my parents barely ever use it. :D
