I think it's finally time for me to drop my 1600+ @ 1.95Ghz and upgrade. I haven't kept up with any of the new chips, so I don't know which is my best bet. I don't want to spend a lot of money and I want the chip to be able to overclock. It will remain on my Epox 8K5A2+ with my 512Mb Corsair Plat PC3200 stick. All suggestions are appreciated because I am out of the overclocking "loop" and don't know what to buy. :)
Well your board only supports up to 266fsb, which means you can stuff up to a 2600+ T-bred in there. This also include the 2100+ T-bred, which is a potent OC'er. How much money are you willing to spend? Since you said you have pc2700 RAM, maybe an 8RDA+ and JIUHB 1700+ could fit your budget (for OC'ing that is). If you don't want to OC, then I don't see a problem with getting a 2600+:)

Ah, the good ole days - that was some nice o/c, there.....You really have 3 choices for decent bucks: 1700+, 2100+, and 2500+ Barton. I hear of the recent 1700+'s getting to maybe 2.5.....purty good for $50 or so. Barton went up a bit to $93, I think....I'd go Barton for the cache - your mobo may not be able to take advantage of Barton to the fullest...... I'm not 100% sure, though.....but Bartons have been getting to 2.3 - 2.4 without that much fuss.Quote:

That mobo will be your handicap old buddy. Rest assured I'm still plugging away with my 8K3A though ;). The current hot picks are XP2500+ and the XP1700+. The Barton will offer you the greater potential in terms of overall performance. It seems almost everyone who orders one can hit 2.2Ghz on default voltage and most OCers who push a cpu the way you do will find themselves within 100Mhz of 2.4Ghz. Paired with its 512k cache this would make you a noticeable upgrade for less than $100. You'd probably wanna unlock the cpu though as the default multiplier is just 11.
For even less money the XP1700+ has been know to approach the 2.3-2.4Ghz zone with regularity if you get the right model. You must get a DLT3C. The pricing her is less than $60.
Bottom Line: If you can find a DLT3C Xp1700+ then for $ you'll get the best deal. Knowing you you could probably hit 2.5Ghz with it. However, the Barton really seems to be the most popular choice thesedays and I would have to personally recommend it over the XP17. You'll spend more cash to get the cache but I think its worth it. I'm rather tempted myself by the XP2500+.
You might get some recommendations to grab a 8RDA+ for like $85 which would be a great coupling with the Barton. However, considering socketA has pretty much run its course a new mobo has limited lifespan for the performance oriented.
An update the 8K3A series and the 8K5A series do support the Barton cpus. The link provided by XP above was accurate at the time of its creation in 2002, however BIOS revisions have changed compatability.

Anyways, like Sapasion said, the 1700+ chips are inexpensive and a great OC'er. If you are in the states, check out this link from www.svc.com. This is the 1700+ chip to own.
I understand that going from the 1600+ to a 1700+ doesn't seem like much of an upgrade, but a nice OC would change that. Also, like Sapasion mentioned above, the Barton would also be a great pick. Although you probably won't hit 2.2Ghz, stock speeds alone will be a nice upgrade.

XP1800, yes I will be overclocking. The day I don't overclock my CPU is the day I contact saps to get a gun and put me out of my misery :p
Also the ram as I stated is Corsair PC3200, not PC2700 and I'm willing to spend up to $100 or a little over.

I feared my board my being seeing it's end, but at least it's been very good to me. If I decide to go the barton route that will require the new board correct? If so the 8RDA+ isn't really an option because I need the extra IDE (due to my five HDDs and three opticals). Are the Via KT600 boards any good? I really need the onboard raid, but I don't want to compromise performance. Looks like I have some research ahead of me... but nothing new there. ;)Quote:

Forget not mystif is already at 1.95Ghz. Furthermore, it seems to me from what the members who buy the Barton 25 are attesting to that most of them are hitting 2.2Ghz on stock voltage. If he gets a decently OCable cpu I would expect mystif be go over 2.4Ghz with his Barton, provided he could get the right FSB/multiplier comboQuote:

No you can plug the Barton into your 8K5A2+ with either of the two most recent BIOS'. You'll want/have to unlock that default multiplier of 11 even if you wanna go into 2.4Ghz territory of course since without the pci and agp locks of an nForce2 mobo I could your FSB could get much past 200 for very long with very good stabilityQuote:

A Barton would pretty much max out your board, leaving you not so futureproof. For the time being though, it would be a good investment, especially if you are on a budget.Quote:

I think so. Going from what you got now to say 200x12 and doubling your cache. The real question is how high your mobo can run its FSB. But even at say 185x13 I think you'd be noticing the gains from your current sub2Ghz cpu with half the Barton's cache. As you may or may not know unlocking a BArton is just a one connection operation. Of course part of the draw of the 8RDA+ and many other nForce2 mobos is that mobo itself will unlock a Tbred or Barton cpuQuote:

I've never owned a board that unlocked a CPU for me, I have always done it the manual way... which isn't a big deal so I look past that.Quote:

That's correct he will have to manually unlock his Barton. But, forget not that mystif is one of SF's most accomplished OCers. Manually unlocking a Barton cpu will not be a challenge for himQuote:

It seems the best chips today are the AQXEA Y 2500+ chips. These are usually doing very well, but if you get an AQXEA 9, you might not fare as well. From what I hear that chip is good, but most people are crapping out well before those who have the Y. The 1700+ will probably OC the best, but you can't get 512K. The cache really comes in handy in things like UT2k3, so if you play that the Barton is your best bet. Newegg is still hit or miss for the best stepping though (the days of advertising steppings seem to be gone ;)). If I were to buy today I would probably go with the 2500+, but that 1700+ would really tempt me. Quite a few guys are doing well over 2.4 with those, and the best thing is it does it at low vcore uppage. Another vote for the 2500 though, and I really would try to get the most out of that board first. I didn't want to upgrade boards myself, but my 8K5A2+ recently died. You can probably run over 200 no probs, but HDD corruption is probable (as you already know). With a stock FSB of 166 as well, you will definitely need to unlock probably if you want the most MHz. Have fun with that baby :cool:

There are only 2 boards currently out to consider if you are OC'ing; The 8RDA+ and the Abit NF7-S V2.0 VIA still thinks they can use dividers to win OC'ers over...Quote:

Oaks is spot on. Those are the two front runners as the Asus crowd has reallt waned in light of pricing and performance of the aforementioned other two. Still I'd see what you can do with your current mobo first

I think the general concensus on the CPU seems to be the 2500+ Barton though:D
The 8RDA+ doesn't have dual channel DDR, correct? Will I be missing out on very much performance without Dual Channel? I realize that requires two sticks of identical ram, but I don't want to skip something I may want and regret not having later on.
