Speakers for dorm room

I'm trying to decide which speakers to buy for college. Im going to be using my computer as my stereo, and it will be my only sound system. I was planning on buying the monsoon pm14s, as they are good sound quality, and can get decently loud. However, I was offered a great deal on the Logitech 680s ($200). Now I dont have room for a 5.1 system right now, but I was thinking I could just hookd up the front two speakers and the sub, then add the other sattelites next year. Will the 680s sound good, and have plenty of power w/ only two speakers? Is it worth the extra money over the pm14s for 2 channel mode? Another option I may consider is the Altec Lansing 621s, but the PM14s seem superior to me.

Theres will be used for music, gaming and tv, plugged into my revolution 7.1. Music is the top priortiy.

What do you guys think?

For 200 bucks, the 680s are a steal. I'd totally get them. Besides, most music is only stereo anyways, so it comes out of 2 channels. For a bit this summer, I had it set up with only the sub and 2 sattelies because of space issues, and they got plenty loud. You'll love the 5.1 option later on when you use it.

That's too good of steal to pass up. Go for the Z680's, unless you can find the PM14's at a REALLY GOOD price. Monsoon has recently gotten out of the multimedia speaker market, so those will probably be discontinued.:(

I'll tell ya my experience...I originally got the 5.1 5200's because 5.1 sound would be badass in a dorm. Yeah, well, I didn't have room either so I settled for 2.1 all year. Now that I have a townhouse with some friends, 5.1 can be resurrected. I know the speakers aren't the best, but they fill the room nicely.

Moral of the story, get the Z680's and be very happy:D

alright, well i found out the 680s are most likely going to be refurbs (they couldnt gurantee they would be new), but I can also get a similar deal on brand new PM14s. So im trying to decide weather I should just get the pm14s for now, and get whatever the best 5.1 system is next summer, or get the 680s and keep them for a while. Also, the 680s are going to be a pain to get, so i have to decide if its worth the hassle. but 68watts/speaker plus a 188watt sub for a dorm room, versus 25w/ channel and a 50watt sub really intices me.

anyway, am I going to have problems because they're refurbs? They still will have a full warrenty from Logitech. Arent these the ones that everyones been having problems with?

grab the 680's, you'll thank yourself later.

Dude, justin timberlake may be a pop singer that sometimes gets bad lyrics, but the boy can SING. I don't care what your musical tastes are, the dude's got a voice (and a body to boot!).

Evidently, not one person who's replied so far has read the words "Music is the top priority" in your original post :D

The z-680s, while they offer powerful (not accurate though) bass, lack greatly behind the Megaworks 550s and the Klipsch 5.1s. The PM-14s blow them away in sound quality, they sound MUCH better with music, and the sub isn't exactly weak.

As for making a hall party...if you turn the z-680 sub up that much, you're also gonna annoy everyone above and below you. Just something to remember.

well I do want loud, but I guess the PM14s are loud enough for most of the time if the sound quality is going to be that much better. The Klipsch are probably out of the question, cause they'll cost me around 100 more than the 680s. As far as the sub annoying people above and below me, I have a set of 212pros for quiet hour.

Anyone else think i should get teh pm14s. this is going to be the only sound system in my room.

Actually, I think they will be sufficient. You won't play them at 75% the whole time, and will most likely be right next to your rig while the music is playing. Dorm rooms aren't that big, so these should fill the room easily. Oh, and nice choice on the headphones;)

The PM-14's + Revo soundcard = music nirvana.:D

whatever you buy, make sure that you can buy it twice...

I think im just going to get the monsoons. I've only heard them in a huge open store, but they sounded pretty good.

The Monsoon PM-14's paired with a Revolution card will sound excellent, you will not be disappointed. I installed this combo for a family member recently and get to hear it all the time, and the sound quality is superb.

In the Revo driver, turn off the crossover entirely, since the PM-14's have a built-in crossover. Turn off bass-management too, and select the "no processing" mode. Listen to .wav files ripped to hard disk with EAC at highest quality, using Winamp 2.91 with the kernel streaming plug-in. Very nice.

dude, chicks hate that ****. I know because I tried it, they are always tring to sleep, and come biatching. Happened to me as well as two other guys on my floor.

I got some z560s, they are great. I jsut use the front 2 speakers though. But if you don't care about other people hearing the music, might I suggest a good pair of hear phones. Say some closes headphones from Seinnheiser (closed meing you can't hear what's out side).

This calls for the 212s. Haha, I am so for these bad boys now.
