i'm finally putting some umph into my sub (i think it's finally broken in), and dear god. club never sounded so good!
whoever said the z680s have a stronger sub is way off. this thing is a much more powerful, and has much more of a presence than the z680s, when you want it. unlike the 680 sub which was overwhelming ALL THE TIME. and, it's tight. not bleedy. wow.

Actually many people did :( :( Which confuses me because Ive used the 680's sub and the 5.1s sub side by side and they were about the same , except the 5.1 killed it in the 37hz and up range in terms of loudness and the 680's was able to do 30 hz with less distortion at extreme levels. (even though it cant reach as low as the 5.1 at lower volumes (5.1 sub is basically flat to 36-37 hz)
If you go to many forums they will say that the 680s are louder, I would have to say " depends on the music and your settings"
I can understand the regular 5.1 sub, but the Z680's sub CAN'T be more powerful than the ULTRA'S sub.:confused:
LOL, according to PCGAMER magazine ( a joke btw) the reviewd the ulras and went on to mention something like this:
"During our Quake 3 loudness tests on Q3dm17, where there is lots of bass and ambient sounds the ultras emited a farting sound at louder volumes while the 680's showed no strain.."
Thats not it exactly but it was very close to that...
Of course I will test this when I get my system :)
Basically they based the 2 paragraph review on that one test, pretty funny :P

It does seem strange that they rated the 680's higher than the ultras for sub performance though... (no comment) ;)
i have pissed off the neighbors with my ultras, and i can assure you, there has never been any farting from my sub ever. there is a music track that my old v.2-400 sub had a hard time with the bass, its one of the first tunes i use to audition speakers, the ultras had no problem with this track at extremely high volumes. either PCgamer was using a shitty sound card, or they had the bass turned way up in the equalizer or on the control pod or both.
Well in all likelyness, PCGamer probably tested it on a sb live 5.1 with the sub preamp set to +15 dB lol
My dual Z560 subs will "eat" the Ultra sub. j/k;) :D

as do i my friend as do i. it is more "tight" then the previous 5.1 and i compared it to the 680's at bestbuy and it seemed more "noobish loud" i.e. the sub is the only thing you can hear which has a higher "empressiveness" amongst the people who just got into audio. i almost fell for it until newegg had a deal on the regular 5.1 which made it like $30 more than the 680's.Quote:

lol. yeah i got that:p btw pinchy what program do you use to watch your dvd movies in? i dont know whats the best one so i use windows media player. is there one that optimizes the sound for the ultras? i plan on getting the new matrix movie and the first starwars movie to test out these "tight";) bad boys.

I've tested the pm5.1s with powerdvd xp4.0 dlx, powerdvd 5, windvd 5 platinum (newest one).
The best vid quality is from windvd unfortunately, because powerdvd 5 seems to have the best sound of them all.
I dont like the userinterface of windvd plat(newest one) compared to powerdvd 5.
I like the fact you can set the dynamic range to reference levels so it has more impact in powerdvd5, its very buggy in windvd and sometimes it resets itself.
I agree with you that WinDVD Platinum has better image quality, but are you sure that PowerDVD 5 wins under the sound quality? WinDVD Platinum has (I found it some what hidden) Trusurround and SRS features to make the sounds sound better. When I turned these features on AND adjusted them I found it that they performed better than PowerDVD 5's sound quality.Quote:

But with the features off from both, i'll agree, PowerDVD5 is better in sound quality. Although I find it important to add that they both play sound great
dont you have to buy the "multi-channel" versions of windvd and powerdvd in order to get full 5.1 support? and arent both of those programs like $70 a pop? thats too much for DVD software when you can buy a stand-alone dvd player for $80.

I received the free 'basic' PowerDVD 4.0, which I paid like $25 to have upgraded with the 'multi-channel sound pack'. $25 for great DVD software isn't a bad choice, IMO.
I think the next thing I'll be doing is upgrading to PowerDVD 5.0
