This is in fact what I expect I'll have in the coming years, a WII and an 360.
Peter Moore = Pimp
He knows whats happening.
With Nintendo not really going after the same market as the other two, one of them was going to end up cozying up. I saw this coming from a long ways away.

Sony has yet to impress me with the PS3, the only game really worth noting so far is Assassin's Creed.
If I had to venture a guess I'd say that because the console industry has such high costs because they have to take losses on hardware, that the market is really only capable of supporting two firms. If you think about it there's always been only two consoles, and then a third firm that gets the scraps and loyal fanboys. Eventually, if that firm can't become a market player again in the next round, they go bankrupt.
Generation 1:
Nintendo Entertainment System
Sega Master System
Generation 2:
Nintendo SNES
Sega Genesis
Generation 3:
Nintendo N64
Sony PlayStation
Generation 4:
Sony PlayStation 2
Microsoft XBOX
Generation 5:
Microsoft XBOX360
????
I think that's really how it's going to end up. Now, I don't have any hard data to support the idea that the market can't handle more than 2 firms, but it seems plausible. I mean, think of all the consoles that failed: Dreamcast, GameCube, Saturn, 32X, SegaCD, 3DO, Atari Jaguar, Neo-Geo, etc.. Did they ALL fail on technical merit, or is the market only big enough for two firms? Dreamcast seems like the best piece of evidence for that theory. The market had already decided that Nintendo 64 and PlayStation were the firms in that round, and there simply wasn't room for another console regardless of how superior it might have been. It's at least, plausible.
It seems to me like Microsoft has already established them self for this round. If they actually meet their target goal of 10m units in the first year, they will be above the “failure” point before either other console gets moving. It would be hard for the market to tip against them.
The really problem is for Sony. Their costs are so ASTRONOMICALLY high that if PS3 does fail, and it can, it’s going to be hard for them to punch back next round. Nintendo can fail and not be in such bad shape, even if they have to sit out two rounds because: they have GameBoy and Nintendo DS AND their costs are a lot lower.
I think that Nintendo has taken a very careful approach since they saw what happened with Sega when costs got to high. I mean both Saturn and Dreamcast where complete failures that had extremely high costs. I definitely think that played into Nintendo's decision to make GameCube a relatively low-cost unit, and then when it failed to achieve market dominance, it didn't hurt so bad.
Microsoft, on the other hand, doesn't really care because they have more money than they know what to do with. It's really all about Sony this round. Who will win, PS3 or Wii?
wouldnt sega core system be a rival to the first nintendo?
I suppose it could be.Quote:

OT: Anyone else ponder what kind of 'adult' games could be played on the Wii? I can see it now: Leisure Suit Larry: Game Bang.....
sorry, I couldn't resist :p

Well, yeah, but that had no competition and that was before the market was defined.Quote:

The reason why 360 wins is that both systems will be identical kind of how the x1900 vs 7900 is. So why would i pay 600 to get the same thing for 350 (Microsoft will lower prices before ps3 launch) Another thing that pisses me of is this media center ******** (get your songs here.) comon i dont want a 600 dollor itunes console. I watched e3 sony confrence and was majorly pissed at the way their trying to make peaple buy songs or other crap instead of focusing on the real reason their selling a console.
You must be young. Both Intellivision and Colecovision (especially) were major players in the Atari age. Had the video game market not imploded in 1984 Colecovision would've outsold Atari that year and possibly still been a contender (with a newer console) when the NES emerged in '86.Quote:

I really think ps3 will enjoy some success but looking at it right now it might be number 3...however I don't think it'll have the same outcome that the 3do...sega cd/saturn/etc had...the ps2 had the largest fanbase and reguardless of how much the ps3 costs or what games come out for it...I think people will buy it because the 2 previous platsations were so huge and if the first 2 were great...then the 3rd must be like mega great right?
Its pretty much ****ed up in japan at least, DS is gaining so much momentum over there, Wii will ride that wave wih its "non games" just like DS did, low price, awesome lineup and fun games.
Just an example why PS3 has it worst in japan than north america
First pricing from a Japanese retailer unveils an amazing price of 71,800yen w/o tax for the PS3 non-tardpack. With tax that's a whooping 75,390yen! That's 682.85 in USD right now.

I cant wait to see Famitsu's developer/retailer/gamer reaction to all next gen consoles, which they'll buy and which they think will be most fun/sell more, etc. They did after last year's E3 and TGS.
LOL close to 700 bucks for the gimp PS3 in Japan? I bet that wont go over very well.
you're forgetting Intellivision, Colecovision, Commadore 64, and perhaps even the first Macs.Quote:

See, I disagree. I believe the NES sold more than all of those combined.Quote:

But in order to redefine a market you need to define it first, which is where Atari and their ilk come in as Generation 1.
