I want a DP Athlon system, but I'm not happy with the current motherboards. (No OC ability whatsoever!)

Waiting a few months should let me save a bit more money, allow the platform to stabilize and make faster Athlon MP's available.

It should make for an interesting cooling project, getting something that will cool both processors.

Yeah I guess it would be better to wait a bit, when a nicely overclockable Palomino is released. Thankfully even if you can't get a good overclocking dual processor platform, there's always the bridges on the processors. https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif

The current problem is the only motherboard available is a server motherboard. Lots of nice features, but expensive and no support at all for overclocking. You just don't overclock a server.

I wonder I can use a water cooler on a DP system?

I suppose you could but the way I understand it you're going to need either one powerful pump or two normal pumps, so that you're not passing warm water from the one block to the other.

You can run the processors of a dual processor motherboard at different speeds right? That'd be cool since you'd be able to get the max O/C out of both of them. https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif

I doubt it. It certainly isn't possible with Intel systems. It actually may be technically possible with AMD systems due to the Point to Point nature of the EV6 bus, but even if it is I don't think you would ever see it happen. SMP by its very nature implies that the processors are equal.

I can also see it messing with the OS in terms of allocating threads to a processor.

Moridin, I'm just looking for an article that I read on asynchronous CPU speeds in MP mainboards. I'm almost dead sure that it was possible to have a Duron and a Thunderbird in the same motherboard, and at different speeds.

So it seams I wasn't to far off https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif, this was about what I expected. On the other hand it doesn't rule out asymmetrical processor speeds, so maybe there is hope after all. I still don't think we will ever see this in supported configurations though.

Just as a side note, I saw one article where they benchmarked a 760 MP with duel Athlon (not Athlon MP) processors and found that it often under performed a single Athlon in the same board. This was true even for some multi-threaded applications.

(Sorry, I looked for the link, but couldn't find it.)

I would think the biggest problem to solve would be cache coherency which likely explains some apps not working and poor system performance with non-MP Athlons Athlons. I will probably re-post this in HT, as we seem to be getting a bit off topic for cooling https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/06/5.gif Still it is very interesting.

Interesting, I don't know why one Thunderbird on the same board would perform better than Dual Thunderbirds? Was it a reasonable gap in performance, or just above neledgeble?

As for the pumps, you'd have to get a reply from White, Duckman, ynd69 or someone else who is heavily into water cooling. I'm not there yet. Yet. http://dev.www.sharkyforums.forums.relay.cool/
