But... if the Raiders do sign Culpepper... maybe that gives him a one year reprieve that most rookie QBs in his position don't get (i.e. forced to start right away and thrown to the wolves... never to regain their confidence).
The thought of Culpepper as a raider has been a nightmare for me for months. I think I mentioned this a while back in this thread. I think Russel should be at camp, but part of the problem is that the Raiders don't have a lead negotiator and are not used to the 1st pick. I expect it to be a long hold out.
Walsh was a classy guy. He did cut players a bit early. Lott made comeback player of the year as a Raider. But you got to love how Walsh coached. His nice image hid the ruthless coach he was. But that is what made him great.

There has been quite a bit of discussion here about knee injuries and rehab time before they are 100% again.Quote:

I think that this year will be a HUGE litmus test for him.

Culpepper is now a Raider.
Good move on their part I think... especially with Russel holding out.
I would think that Culpepper would be a good one year starter (at least) while Russell is groomed.
I've been dreading this for months. The only positive I can think of is that both Russel and Culpepper are more mobile qbs with a similiar style. It might work out. My hope is there is no signing bonus and that he is not on the roster on opening day. And that this helps get the Russel deal done. I think his best days are behind and that he won't regain any of his old form. My nightmare is just starting. I would be very happy to be wrong. Unfortunately, most hope and logic die when talking about the Raiders.

The Raider coaches that watched Culpepper work out said that his throws were "spotty" yet they still offered him a contract. I'm betting that this is more to put pressure on Russel then anything else. No one will talk about the $$ Daunte will get, but I'm sure it's not that much. Culpepper was w/o a team and I'm sure at this point he'd accept anything to get a chance to show that he can still play. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Culpepper is a human turnover. I cannot stand QB's that turn the ball over, no matter what the rest of their stats look like. He has pretty much averaged a fumble and and interception a game for his career. And from the games I have seen, it seems he not only turns it over a lot, but does so at key times in the game.
nothing like brooks though, come on now, you even got the aaron brooks glitch.
Heh, Owens missed practice due to his annual "hamstring" preseason injury.
Not a Favre fan, eh? :DQuote:

(Aug. 1, 2007) -- If quarterback Daunte Culpepper is as successful throwing passes as he is negotiating deals, the Raiders are going to be happy they signed him.
Acting as his own agent, Culpepper negotiated a one-year deal with the Raiders that could be worth as little as $750,000 or as much as $5.5 million, which just happens to be the salary Miami had been scheduled to pay him this season.
Culpepper's contract calls for him to make $750,000 in guaranteed money. If he's on the Raiders roster the first game of the season, he'll make $2.6 million and that will increase to $3.2 million after six games.
Culpepper also has up to $500,000 in play-time incentives and another $1.65 in hard-to-earn performance and play-time incentives.
If Culpepper has a Pro-Bowl caliber year and the Raiders win the Super Bowl, the quarterback would make $5.5 million. In the event the Raiders do not win the Super Bowl but Culpepper still plays well, he could make up to $4 million this season.
But if Culpepper plays strong this year -- and he's expecting he will -- then the real riches really await. Culpepper is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.
Some Culpepper and Mcnabb reports from the first "full pads" day of practice.
