This is interesting...

So McCown wants out of Detroit so he can be a starter. Oakland is the most likely place for him to go. With Oakland picking #1 and Detroit #2, if Detroit trades McCown to Oakland, then Oakland is more likely to pass on JaMarcus Russel and take Calvin Johnson. There are many more teams wanting to trade up for Johnson so in effect Detroit could de-value their pick if they trade McCown to Oakland. However, he only has one more year left on his contract, so next year you aren't likely to get anything for him. It will be interesting to see what happens.

He was never "found innocent," though, because he hasn't ever even been on trial. True, he (allegedly :D ) instigated the Vegas thing by "making it rain," but he was never even mentioned as a suspect of anything. The whole "making it rain" thing isn't really even uncommon amongst those circles from what I understand. He was interviewed, that's it. Never arrested, never on trial.

Again, I'm not trying to say he's a model, upstanding citizen, or that he isn't a black mark on the NFL's image, I'm just saying that in no way is it just a "wrist slap" to lose a year of playing and a year's salary, especially when you haven't even been arrested for anything.

On a related note, I heard on the radio today that he is going to be spending his year off finishing his degree at WVU. It's good to see that he's at least planning ahead.

Drew Bledsoe retired earlier this morning. Can't say it's much of a surprise, I couldn't see anyone picking him up even as a backup mainly because of his immobility.

nobody passes up a talent like russell because they have mccown, what u smoking? last I heard oakland may be able to get culpepper on the cheap and use him to mentor russell, either way they take a QB... russell needs mentoring so it doesn't really matter.

QB's are way way way more important/valueable than WR's, a WR can't lead a team, every play goes through the QB.

Johnson may be Jerry Rice meets Randy Moss, but oakland put itself into a situation where it can't take anyone but a QB.

I'm telling you this is a plausible scenario. If Oakland believes it can fill its hole at QB by getting McCown then it could also get what they believe is a future, or maybe immediate, franchise player in Calvin Johnson. Obviously we've all heard that Johnson is the best player in this draft, and not by a small margin. I don't think a team is off base by thinking that Johnson is a better addition to their team than Russell.

Again if Oakland thinks McCown can come in and be a decent starter for them next year (see the Texans acquisition of Shaub) then drafting the best player in the whole draft is much more likely. Also, McCown has experience in the NFL, he's thrown for over 400 yards a couple times, won a number of games with a terrible Arizona team etc. I'm not saying that he's going to the pro bowl, but it could be that Oakland would like to get a veteran QB and a potentially amazing WR to immediately upgrade their offense.

This all might be for naught, seeing as how the Lions may desperately want Johnson to still be on the board so they can either take him, or their #2 has the most valuable.

the draft is gonna be crazy, it's like you know who will be taken but then teams surprise you and take someone else and everyone is like " what the ???? "

I agree that Calvin is the best talent available and everyone knows the old saying, you take the best player available regardless... but the Raiders can't do that.

by everyone's estimation Russell can throw the ball between his legs 750 yards with the grace of a swan on a morning swim.... sounds like Davis' kind of guy, I'm just not sure how you can justify passing on a guy you prayed for the last 40 years at a time when you so desperately need him, you have the person and the need...I can't see them passing up Russell, from a logical standpoint....Davis hasn't really been known for that though, so I wouldn't be surprised if they drafted Joe Thomas or something.

I don't think they pass on Russell UNLESS they trade for a QB, which at this point looks like it could be McCown. It's really just a question of whether or not they complete that trade to me.

Yep, which is what I brought up the other day and someone called me nuts. Its pretty interesting, if Detroit trades McCown to oakland they might hurt their value at #2, unless they surprise us all and really wanted Russell all along. I still contend more teams want to trade up for Johnson than Russell. So I think the Lions would want Johnson still on the board at #2. Who knows though, there are so many lies going on this time of year.

If I were Oakland, I would go for McCown and draft Johnson. From what I remember, McCown has the strong downfield arm that they like, and he has the experience to come in and play day one. Maybe not a world beater, but more than just someone to plug a hole at least. Then you have filled the QB need and can still take what most consider to be the top player in the draft. Only problem I could see with Johnson would be coexistence with Randy Moss.
