For some reason I thought that you were comparing a guy like Leaf with a guy like Eli Manning.

Yea... fans get excited about QBs taken #1. But they should temper their excitement... because for every 1 that turns out it seems like there are 9 who are not playing in the league within 4 years.

Every player drafted is a risk. Even the ones that are deemed sure hits. I seem to remember a ton of hype around Tony Mandarich when he was drafted at #3 overall. Was hyped as a "can't miss" prospect.

But I think there are more QBs that end up as failures than any other single position. Getting a good QB is a longshot at best.

Yeah, like Tim Couch--the ultimate qb bust. Akili Smith has to be up there as well.

Maybe that's why the Brownies choose the tackle first. When Miami passed on Brady Quinn they decided to give it a shot. The Tim Couch era probably still haunts them.

I heard recently that Akili Smith was trying out for the Calgary Stampeders in the CFL. Hard times...

Sometimes I wonder whether you can even call some QBs a "bust".

Confidence is such a big part of the game. Good players out of college have an abundance of it. And yet when they hit the NFL, it's a whole new ballgame. Maybe for a QB it's the most noticeable difference... things move a LOT faster.

And so when a star college QB gets drafted high in the NFL, it usually means that he gets stuck on a crappy team with little support around him. No offensive line, recievers who can't get open, no running game (i.e. teams stack up vs. the pass), and chronically playing from behind because of a bad defense.

It's really a formula for a shattered ego.

People see this highly drafted QB coming in, and the expectations are that the stud QB is instantly going to singlehandedly turn the team around. Bad expectations.

Football maybe more than any other major sport is a team game. One missed block and your QB can be taken out for the year. One slip by a DB and the other team wins. One wrong pattern by a WR, the QB throws the ball to a spot and its intercepted easily. One missed snap from center...

In the NFL, nobody wins without a decent team around them.

Look at Barry Sanders.

And of course when it more likely than often doesn't happen that way, the QBs confidence gets destroyed.

Once the confidence is gone, it's hard to get back again.

Would have Brett Favre been the player that he is now had he been on the Atalanta Falcons for a few more years (when Atlanta and Green Bay were headed in two different directions)?

I for one am really for not throwing a QB to the wolves in their first year. Bring in some vet and let the QB learn the ropes for a year or two.

Spank I agree with you, the worst teams get the early picks but you can't do anything about it unfortunetly. I mean, a lot of the time it's the coach's fault looking for a qb that can start immediately and not developing them. It really is a crap shoot since if you're picking a qb that high you are desperate and you need to start them the next season.

Yea... I understand that. And it will continue to be the way that it is.

But I think that QBs sometimes end up being "busts" for different reasons that other positions do.

A poor offensive tackle on a bad team can still do his job... a QB can't. And once a QB loses his confidence, it's pretty much over. I think that the position is the most mental position in the game... by far. There are plenty of QBs who have less than appealing physical skills (i.e. Joe Montana) but can still dominate.

Even Todd Marinovich showed some flashes of potential in his rookie season... it's been a while, but I seem to remember him finishing out his rookie season starting and getting a few wins.

And then of course the next season he blew chunks.

But I think that Marinovich was obviously doomed for failure... the reason being that he liked smoking pot more than football. You can't win in the NFL with that lack of dedication at the QB position.

I don't follow them closely, but when you have shockey and burress in miami i pay attention to see when they come up for camp. They need to work with eli throwing to them to get in sync. Eli has actually asked them to come up to work with him. Burress said he's coming up, no word from shockey.
