You answered your own question. For someone that knows what they are doing some OC have no risk at all. My 2100+ was made on the same line that makes the 3000+. So when i run my 2100 at the speed of a 2800 am I overclocking or just running at the speed it should run at. IF your 1700 is a tbred Rev2 the 2400+ you would be buying could have been the chip right next to your 1700 on the production line.

Currently at 28 hours running and 43% completed. I should be at 50% by the time I go to bed tonight. (eta for WU delivery is Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.)

There has to be something wrong... I dont think it is taking advantage of SSE.... I cam complete a WU on a P3 500Mhz faster then you!!!!

P3 500 - 30 minutes per frame, 51 hours to complete a P839_P53monomer839 :)

yeah i'm with colossus here, that's WAY too slow for that processor, regardless of what kind of protein it's working on....my 1800+ at 1.6 has never had a unit with frame times of over 14 minutes, which works out to about 23.5 hours to complete...check the folding faq's sticky thread and get yourself setup to take advantage of SSE...it makes a huge difference.

I am still using the 325beta, should I change to the new 4.0 or just keep on using the 3.25.

My AMD 1600+ was my work horse folder and actually turned in the most WU's. I have it overclocked to 2000+ speeds, but we aren't talking about anything drastic either. I would think that a 1700+ would be a good machine if SSE was enabled.

Ok, I read through thr FAQ, and the readme and found no example of how to set F@H to use SSE/3DNow. In the faq, the only mention of it is to say that the machines they use to calculate the deadlines does not hve/use SSE/3DNow.


The only thing I can see that might be it is in the advanced menu, F@H core priority is set to the default "Lowest possible (recommended)" Should I set this to "Slightly higher"??

Should I remove the -advmethods command line param in my shortcut?

Is there another command line param that needs to be set to use the SSE/3DNow?

BTW: I got this 'Big' folding WU after I added the -advmethods to my shortcut. (could it be that version 4.0 uses the SSE by default and by placing this in the command line, I have toggled it off?

hmmm, that kind of makes sense. I'll remove the param and rerun the program and see what happens.

[13:10:54] Extra 3DNow boost OK.

I'll let the program run for a few hours (without the -advmethods param) and see if that did make a difference.

OK I do it a little different than most of the others, but it works well and has less steps.

Get the 3.25 bata client and place it in a folder that you name Folding@Home. Create a shortcut from the exe icon. In the shortcut properties box add –advmethods and –forceasm to the end of the command string. Be sure to leave a space in front of each -. Then place a copy of the shortcut into the startup folder on the start menu if you want it to auto start.

You should remove all old folding at home files before doing this. Be sure to use the uninstaller first, and then clean up the remaining files/folders.

Why am I scared?

I have been so bored with what I have that I am looking into a 10 - 20 workstation folding farm or Seti farm :)

But we shall see.. Still working on the specs and how I wanted it configured...

My main problem with farming has been the heat. At 100% CPU cycles, they put out a lot of heat.

Ok, I spent some more time looking for info on F@H configuration and found the -forceSSE command line parameter. (this is the equivalent of -forceasm in version 3.25 but this new command is specific to AMD processors.) FYI: I'm running the 4.0 client.

Now in my log file it says..

Extra SSE Boost OK (where it used to be Extra 3DNow Boost OK)
I returned the core priority to 'Low' and lowered the molecule draw rate to it's minimum. Since it's almost always running in the background anyway.

I also found out that the -advmethods has no effect on speed, it just gives you access to newer folding projects.

I'll see if this SSE thing gives any kind of real boost. I'll keep you posted.
