And yet the stats don't always mean anything.
I remember the announcers talking about how Ricky Williams dropped about ten pounds and got leaner and meaner... this being the year AFTER he ran for 1,800 yards.
Should have did better right? Didn't. And he actually played a full year that year.
Gallery only has like 16% body fat. VERY impresssive for an O-lineman. What has that accounted for thus far? Diddley at this point.

When a guy is an All Pro lineman and physically improves himself in the off season, its usually a good thing. When you are well over 300lbs, I imagine cutting from 350ish to 325ish makes a huge difference on pulling and on screen blocking. and 325 is still a good sized lineman. For a RB it could be good or bad to loss 10 lbs. Maybe wore out and took more of a pounding with the lost bulk?
Now with Gallery, I am sure he has all the physical tools and some. All top picks have the phyisical attributes. His problems are probably more technique. A lot of physically gifted linemen use pure strength in college and never have to perfect technique until they get to the pros. He obviously is having problems in that area.

If we were to assign probability, I'd give Gallery a 50-50 chance at this point. Not nearly confident enough to bet on it... I just think that it's entirely possible that he will still pan out.

That season, he did a lot worse. But I don't think that it was because of the weight loss... I think it was because the blocking was a whole lot worse.Quote:

But I also think that his stats are influenced by being on such a pathetic offense. Recievers that can't get open, and QBs who can't read a defence (translation: coverage sacks). And also an inordinate amount of seven step drops by the QB. More seven step drops than three step drops = more sacks.
There are also tackles who struggle at left tackle (which typically doesn't have a TE to help out) but who flourish at right tackle. And right tackle is what he played at college.
The guy had a good rookie season from all that I heard. It's strange that he'd show that potential and then look like one of the biggest busts over the next two years. Something seems amiss.
I'd give him one more year at right tackle.
And if he has relied on strength too much in the Pros, maybe he'll dedicate himself in the offseason to actually learn his craft.
(another thing that I have heard is that he has had revolving o-line coaches)

Jordan had good numbers as a backup on the Jets. And the Raiders may have one of the worst lines that I've ever seen.

Actually... I take that back... Williams is a good back... he just can't stay away from the pipe.
Jordan, like many part time backs who had very limited cariies, had an excellent yard per carry. However, once the carries went up to that of a full time back, that number dropped considerably. You can not look at yards per carry when a guy has never had considerable carries and use it to judge how good a back is.Quote:

And at least in his 1st season with the Raiders, he ran for over 1,000 and only played 14 games. And he also caught passes for over 500 yards to boot. Pretty decent season all things considering.

I though the saem thing may have happened to Westbrook, but he has managed to keep his yards per carry very high as the amount of carries increased. He does have a much better line though. He is following the exact same career path as Tiki Barber, and thats fine with me :-). I do think he may end up being even a little better though, as he may be the best pure receiver as a RB since Marshal Faulk.
You also cannot look at how a back does behind that terrible line in Oakland and use it to judge how good he is imo.Quote:
