Well I'm not exactly going back to the stoneage!:D I still run watercooling (although without pelts these days). I also upgraded my CPU to a 3.0C that runs 24/7 folding at 3.75Ghz with just the normal watercooling and it's got a 9800XT in it. It's no slouch.:D

I just don't want to push my stuff to such high overclocks (mainly my videocard) only to have them break and need replacement.

I broke so much stuff in the past year and I'm kind of done with that. Plus I work like 80 hours a week now and spending the time benching after putting in so many hours as a network consultant is not really what I want to do.

I am, however, plan to get a 10k USD budget after a year or two of my real job and just get a top end system to become #1 in 3dmark :P, but I don't think I'll actually do it. but who knows ...

10 grand on a 3dmark rig? wow you probably should make the front of the orb. youd need a socket 939 mobo, fx-53, dual channel bh5 ram at 250fsb minimum at 2-2-2-6 timings, cpu at 3GHz minimum, r420 at insane clocks. plus youd need lots of modding and two strong prometeias, one for cpu, one for gpu. then youd make the front page for a week to a month before technology advances again and your knocked back down. of course youd have a gaming rig good for 10 years easy :)

Prometeia's won't do it...

they should, prommies are the best cooling besides liquid nitrogen and other really exotic means such as cyrogenic, deep freezing, etc. prommies you can get like $500 each, use one for cpu and gpu. I hear you can even mod proms to chill a few centigrades further. you gain very little past like -50c anyway. best thing to do is buy 5 video cards and 5 cpus and sell the 4 others, keep the best overclocker :)

He was referring to custom made cascade phase-change systems. Those can get you MUCH lower than a prommie.;)

xDuck is right on this one, it will take alot more than prommies to get to #1 even to crack the top 20... something like baker18 r404, or dual cascading cooling... not to mention being lucky enough to get a chip and card that will do insane things and then successfully modding them without screwing something up (like me).

and since when can a mach 1 $500 prommie get you -50C? a mach II with mods, maybe, can get you that.

The difference is minimal.. I havent tried tighter timing due to only 2.8v

Yes I did vmod the core, pumping around around 1.84v in there when stock is around 1.65v. Stock voltage I was able to get 327 out of the core, now I'm able to get 355 on the core so far. Planning on pumping a little over 1.9v in there and hope to get around 365 or even 370. Next thing I have to do is the vmem mod ;)

btw, I can put as much voltage to the core if I want, enough to kill the card, or even a person :D

Question: How much score would I gain if I use 2-2-2-11 instead of the **** timings right now??

id be careful on the voltage thing, itll be a tragedy to kill such a sweet ti4200, makes me sad even if its not my own! How hard is the core v mod exactly? I v modded my ti500 but it didnt help. I hear ti500s really only respond to intense cooling such as a prometeia while ti4200s and especially 9600s love voltage! also I hear the vmem mod is much risker and more complicated. might be better just to use tweakmonster ramsinks, you could gain 30-40MHz from that! Your tempting me to mod my ti4200s core. I have a thermaltake ti4200 copper cooler, should be good for a modest v mod of 1.9v max and cores of 350-360! youd gain 500+ marks with good ram timings and higher fsb. if you used a v mod guide, link me to it

Well I don't plan on going over 1.95v, highest I intend on giving is around 1.9v, even so, I only use that voltage for benching and when I bench, I have subzero temperature air blowing on it :D First time vmodding is always hard, took me over 3 hours to do cuz I was a n00b :p But then a few days back the whole vmod thing came off and I had the resolder and took me like 15 minutes. And nah, I wouldn't really get good ramsinks, I rather have freezing air blowing over the ram chips than getting heatspreaders.

Here's the link for the vmod, everything you need to know, just make sure your card use the same voltage regulators though. vmem mod is the same thing, except that it uses a separate IC chip
