my PII 333, 192MB Ram 6GB HD, TNT video 16MB, 32X CD, SoundBlaster 32, speakers, 33.6 Modem and 17" Monitor for $175. Used PC's are not going for very much, I was happy to get what I did. My current system in sig minus the monitor and the Ti4600 was $1225 shipped with a Ti200 and a warranty. Getting $750 would really be fair to both parties. I know you have the good stuff in that case but that's the price of our hobby.
I look at about 2 or 3 price breakdowns of equivalent new systems and I usually mark my system about 30 to 40% off the averaged price. I find this to be a good rule of thumb when selling my used systems.

This is a nearly new (less than 6 months old) NEC Fe950+BK..I might just keep this and order her a new one, though - then she gets the new monitor w/warranty. $750 wouldn't be too fair to me, as it is a $340 monitor, taking the system cost down to $410. The HD and case/PS alone is about half of that (not to mention the modded 120mm intake)...and the HD is still under warranty. Add motherboard, cpu, HSF, RAM, DVD, CD-RW, etc - it adds up :)Quote:

I asked a local computer shop what they would charge for a basic Athlon 1Ghz, 256mb RAM, DVD, CD-RW, and 80Gb HD - they said $900-ish without a monitor. I might pick up some Z340 speakers, then shoot for an even 1k, with a new monitor (retails for $378 at Best Buy). What do you think?

He wants $1000...but he has 640Mb RAM, an Audigy, and WinXP. His video card, however, is crappy..and there was no monitor listed. I could easily get more RAM & WinXP (legally, too)..and still beat his price.
What I usually do is I find a place with decent prices, and I make up a cost list for how much it would take to replace the parts individually.
So at the top of the list I put my purchase price for when I get the machine new.
I then have a part by part breakdown with current cost new.
I then take off 20%
They will see a nice invoice, like this:
Total System Purchase New: $1800 on (date)
Part A: $120
Part B; $65
etc..
Total System Current Value: $1000
-20% Non warranty re-imbursement
Total Cost: $800.00
That way they see, plain as day, that they are getting a system that cost, say $1800 9 months ago, for less than half the price.
Tell them straight up - Yes it IS a wonderful deal, BUT - there is no warranty on the system and no support. Don't let them call you for issues. Feel free to haggle on the Non Warranty reimbursement, but remind them that the price here doesn't take into consideration the original assembly fees for the unit. It they attack back, I can get a dell for $700.oo dude! Remind them that there are often Internet Agreements or Service fees tacked on to those deals.
This is usually how I do my PC upgrades. I'll sell my mid-calibre machine and put all the cash into getting a new system.
I'll then take that cash, toss in $600-700 and I have the latest and greatest once again.
It's been awhile for me. I am overdue.

The only problem is I didn't build this all at once..I kinda pieced it together/upgraded it over the months. I'll probably just go to Newegg and get a parts list, then take a percentage off.

I think that the best bet is to build her a new system. Just remember that when she crashes that she will be calling you-so don't undersell yourself. I would also mention that it will run better than most namebrands. You could take something like alienware and show a price and tell her you could build a compareable system at less cost-whatever you determine. Also, items like the nec 950 she probably won't need that much monitor. Don't be afraid to make some money for yourself.. your not riding horses free are you? Do not be afraid to ask for a deposit.
She does photoshop & web design, and wants a flat monitor. I could probably get away with something a bit cheaper, though.Quote:

I considered building a new computer...maybe I'll look into that as well. I would like to sell my current one, though.
If she told you that she doesn't want to spend over 1000 for a computer then take the hint.;) Charge her 950 for the computer and monitor. Tell her if she gives you 950 for it you will throw in another 512 MB of brand new, never used, crucial DDR (bought from newegg for 94 dollars).Tell her if she's real nice to you, you may even come do the dirty work and set it up for her. You'll be getting around 850 for your setup and she'll be getting a great computer with plenty of RAM for her photo editing. Just come across as if you are doing her a favor by selling this computer to her for such a great deal. If she says 1000, she'll spend at least 950. Good luck.
This is basic sales stuff...
First, find out how much the whole system with the monitor is worth. Then ask her to make an offer. Don't offer her a price or else you might end up screwing yourself in the end. If she knows about computers, she'll try and low-ball you. If not, she might just throw out some number that sounds right to her. Either way, you'll at least know what shes comfortable paying right off the bat. Then counter offer with something that sounds more reasonable to you.
All in all, it really has nothing to do with how much the computer is worth. Remember, its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it...

I got this far...and realized I forgot a video card. I could use my GF2 MX, but that would basically cut my profit in half, from $100 to $50-ish. I could save $29 or so by getting an OEM Athlon 1.33 & a Thermaltake Volcano II...but I need another $20 for a GTS-V. I could drop down to a 32x CD-RW, saving another $10-12..and if a generic case/PS would work okay, I could probably shave another $20 off the total cost.

I could just get a GF2 MX200 for about 25 bucks...she doesn't do gaming, so it probably wouldn't matter much.
My builds are often for friends with little money. So I will often charge them a la carte depending on what they can afford. If I buy at the stor I charge what I payed at the store before rebate. For example one I'm doing now she wants a CD-RW. Office Max had one regular $69.99 on sale for $39.99 plus $10.00 mail in rebate making it $9.99. I will charge her $40.00. and collect my profit later when the rebate check comes in. If I'm buying online I'll just round up to the nearest $10.00 mark so if her Motherboard costs me $43.00 I will Charge her $50.00.Quote:

So far using this method I have been able to keep the price of a new system under $300 to build and under $400.00 to sell. The one I'm building now I quoted her $350.00 for a 2.0Ghz with 256 RAM.
