You are joking right? A Plextor 24X? ;)

Plextor is load times are slower, less compatiable, and more expensive.

Reliability you ask?

Owned 3 Liteon's and 1 Plextor, the Plextor broke down after about 2 months of use. The Liteon's are still running flawlessly.

(wonders why anyone would pay twice the amount for a worse drive) :confused:

Anything over 16x has a "spin-up" time. 24x isn't fully 24x....its a 24x MAX. It averages somewhere in the 18-19x range. 40x is near the 28 to 30x and the 48x is upwards of 34x average write speeds. I belive.

Just ordered the Lite On 40x12x48 the other day...should be here today! It's going to replace my 4x HP burner. ;) 'Bout time!

Nice purchase. The difference in speed and reliabity will probably be overwhelming to you, at least it was for me :)

The Lite-On's are good and their 32X model was great. But I will be getting a TDK VeloCD 40x CDRW because they just kickass. If you buy them online they are the same price as Lite-On's or Cendyne's but perform a lot better.

Just because the 40X speed is on the box doesn't mean they all do that. In some of them there is up to a 2 minute difference.

In fact, the TDK 40X burns CD's the fastest and second comes the LG electronics. Actually, the 40X LG is probably even better than the 40X TDK. The 32X LG can burn a 640MB CD in 3:39 vs. the 40X Lite-On burning the same cd in 3:25.

THE TDK 40X burns a 650MB in 3:15.

LG 32X is $64 @ newegg.com and the Lite-On 40X is $69.
Make your choice.

The TDK 40X which is above them all (3:15 a CD guys) is $118 @ EMS Computing.

Definitely the best buy is an LG 32X, which is faster than most of the 40X drivers.

I went with the TEAC 540E. It is fast, has 8mb buffer, udma 33, and Mt. Rainier support right out of the box.

I am not sorry I did, it is much quieter than my roomates 32x lite-on, at least at spin-up. The lite-on quiets down after it gets going. It is a great performer as well.

Anyway, most of the drives out there are good. Lite-on's are a great value, though.

If I didn't just buy one, I would be tempted by the Yamaha F1, though.

I'm not too sure on the times there.

I just burned a 700mb file and it took me 2:25 seconds @ 40X with my Liteon.

Also darn it I wanted to buy a 48X, but than spotted a nice deal ($47) for a 32X Liteon, so I went with that. ;)

Oh and another thing... 48X Liteon is $103 @ newegg... why would anyone want a 40X (48X Liteon is smokingly fast) over a faster 48X that is cheaper? ;)

lite-on rules. i got a lite-on 40x CDROM 4 years ago and it still works awesome. i didnt expect much because it was such a cheap drive at the time but this is th best cdrom drive ive owned. its very fast, strangely quiet, and reads scratched cd's and really cheap cd-r media that other drives have problems with. nothing needs to be said about their cd-rw drives, simply the best. you get reliability, speed, quality, and the best cd writing software available to boot.

I'm sure real world time differs, but usually they would even go slower than in benchmarks.

To be honest, those benchmarks are even using a 700MB CD and not 650MB.

A number of things are involved when burning CDR's, and everyone in this forum could have a different time.

Different media, different computer all together, different file, different burning program, this all makes a huge difference.

Anyway, like I said, the LG Electronics is a good deal, and the 48X Liteon is also a good deal. I just prefer a Teac or a TDK because IMO it's just a better drive.

Also, sorry about the newegg prices, but they change frequently and I got that price from a few days ago and just remembered it.

Yeah I understand what your saying.

But the thing is, I burn 700mb files in 2:25 with Easy CD Creator 5 and your stating 3:15, hmm I can understand a small difference, but that is quite large.

I think I will get a stop watch and time it, just to make sure that the time ESCD gives me is accurate.
