that mobo is based on the KT133A chipset is it not? if so save up another $50-$75 or so and get a new mobo and ddr ram...that'll help you out a lot more better and prepare you for a new processor when the time comes to get one...
... What kinda mobo and ram you thinkin about?! I know a motherboard ALONE should cost AT LEAST 100 bucks US, and then ram is even more expensive for any amount, share with me the deal you are talking about...Quote:

I can't remember exactly where I saw it (might be Rage3D) but there is a patch out for the ATI drivers specifically to fix some issues when playing GTA3 with the 2.1 drivers. Something to do with fog being too thick. Not sure if it will help but......Quote:

He can get a cheap KT266a/KT333 made by ECS Elitegroup for around 50-70. If he doesn't want to buy new RAM then there are some KT266a solutions I believe that accept for SDR & DDR RAM, if not he can always get an ECS K7S5A. Also the Abit KT7 is a KT133 not KT133a chipset.Quote:

I don't really recommend a motherboard change however. If he's going to see any big difference it's with DDR RAM+a KT266a or KT333 but by then he will spend at least $100 if he wants 256MB RAM and the improvement at a decent gaming resolution is not too great.
I think he should really keep the Radeon 8500 but if game compatibility is bothering him more than video card speed a GeForce3 Ti200 is an excellent alternative while not being a game performance slouch either. Good compromise between performance, price, and stability.
I resolved all compatibility issues with the games. I had tuned many bios settings for optimum performance for my old Geforce MX-400 and I was using these settings with my Radeon card as well. This mobo (KT7) with the Radeon will only run stable when I load up optimized defaults in the bios. This is unfortunate because with the Radeon I could get a 3DMark 2001SE of 5866 after tuning but now I get 5019 (however now its stable). Yes I got the GTA3 patch, thanks.
He was saying save up another 50 - 75 bucks in addition to what he was going to spend on a video card and upgrade that. KT266a boards go for about 75 bucks now i.e. Shuttle AK35GTR2.Quote:

That is also the same advice I would give to better his performance.
I had a simular problem when i upgraded from a GF2 MX400 to a GF2 Ti.Quote:

I could run the MX400 at 2xAGP with AMD superbypass on and best memory timming.
As soon as i put in the GF2 ti or my GF2 Pro i had to run at 1x AGP and no superbypass or it'l simply hand almost as soon as i get into windows.
That cost me a good deal of speed. especially the super bypass. About 200 3Dmarks at least. some old mobo's just dont cut it i guess.
My friend has a KT7 with duron 1Ghz and a GF2 ti running fine at best setting but i guess an 8500 might push it over the edge.
In my case i blame the AMD750's memory bus becuase i have good ram and its speed or latency timing doesnt make any difference but it could just be the ram is hitting its limmits if you just had to increase memory latency to get it stable.
Do you have one stick or two? Its tough to get best timming with two or more sticks in any case.
I ment save $50-$75 bucks and add it to what you already had...but now that I realized you were in Canada so my pricing is off...Quote:

I've never had issues with any of those games, its possible that its hardware based.Quote:

I'm playing warcraftIII and it plays nice on my 8500; not sure about those other games because I don't have them.
According to pricewatch theres a 40$ diferent between a 4200 and a gf3 ti 200.
Also I notice the original Gf3 cost the same as a ti 200.
Thats a much better deal
Well it seems like everyone who read your post carefuly said that you shouldn't buy a new card and I agree completely. If you're having trouble with a few games, try different driver sets. If you don't have enough speed, then start working on the rest of your system. There is also overclocking, I don't know if you're doing any yet or not, if not, you might start.
