They should have both. However, upgrade is nolonger a recognized MS term - so they'd only have upgrades if they had stock left. Should be full version 'educational license' software of anything you want - Adobe, AutoCad, Microsoft, etc...Quote:

Not really. Microsoft understand the potential of students using their products first in college, then in their jobs. If you think about it, students that learn a software package like Visual Studio are more likely to request that at work. I know that I used the MSFC for Visual Studios in college and that was given to me for almost nothing. Then you add in the Office products and then employers are almost forced to provide the same software. Apple tried to do this a long time ago by placing their systems in schools. The downside was that the home PC was a fixture at that time.Quote:

Something that you might want to keep in mind is that it is not the exact same software--functionally it is, but the licensing is different. You couldn't, legally, run a commercial web-site off of an academic version of Windows. None of the academic software you have could legally be used in any commercial setting. This is similar to MS's MSDN subscription. You get practically every piece of software MS makes, often before the official release. Many companies buy these subscriptions for development purposes. However, before your SQL Server (or whatever software you are running) goes into production, you have to buy a license.
actually, for those schools that sell ms products really cheap (~$10) thats usually schools that pay tons of money to microsoft for a very expensive license that covers everyone at the school. They have the same deal at my dads work, so he can buy a copy of expensive ms products for home use for almost nothing.Quote:

I got my copy of WinXP Pro for $5.00. Yes, $5.00. In fact, every piece of MS software here is $5.00. One of the perks of attending Purdue University. Go Boilermakers!
I can't find what your talking about. I looked all over their website for WinXP Pro Full version and they cost a lot more than $99. I even called them, and they said that I have to have the product number from the Website that show it for $99.Quote:

I've already got XP Pro and Office XP but when I was in my computer scienec lab (Essentials of Programming in C) there was a message on the board saying that all students in this lab could get a free copy of office and xp pro, just bring a clean cd.
You people do realize that when you pay 5$ to $10 for those Microsoft products, your NOT PAYING FOR A LICENSE.... your univesity actually owns the license and your just paying for the media... you technically still don't have a legal copy if your no longer going to school there... it goes back to the university...
At least that is how those agreements are legally done.. and the way its "supposed" to work..
My opinion is that it is Microsoft WANTING people to pirate their software so they young people get hooked on their products not having a clue that they are now dependant on products costing many hundreds of dollars each.
that makes sense. schools around here are relatively poor compared to US ones so I'm not surprised that mine doesn't offer really cheap MS software. but then again I'll take cheap tuition (relatively of course) over cheap MS software any day ;)Quote:

It depends on the institution, I used to pay between 15-25 bucks for MS software at school. This INCLUDED the license. MS also gives pretty substantial discounts on their website listed HERE. http://www.microsoft.com/education/?...cademicPricing
For example VB Enterprise edition is 199 for Students/teachers...I think its over 1000 retail.(Haven't checked the prices lately).

bought it for 5bucks!! tax included :p (2 years ago) and later xp pro for 8 bucks
MS doesn't do anything out of the goodness of their heart. The schools that can sell the products cheap also happen to have an extra tuition fee, either on its own or added onto the computer lab fee that goes directly to microsoft. If you go to school for 8 semesters you actually end up paying for the full cost of the software you got for only $5. You just don't know it. But hey I don't care. My school just inacted it this year and I graduate in a year so MS won't be getting their full price afterall. And from the EULA I read with my Win2K CD, it is a full copy just like anyother. I could even sell it if i wanted, its right in the agreement.
