A thousand dollars wont really get you anywhere besides an upgrade. Think about it.

TOTAL: $930 plus tax and shipping
That is just 4 items within a computer. I know my current beast of a system i spent around $2,500 for.
Agreed. A thousand won't get you past the "Steve PC", IE a standard fare cheap PC.
A fair gamming rig deserving of the title as at least 3000$
It is possible to go much cheaper, and still have a decent system; but it won't be as fast (obviously)..Quote:

Not really, 256(and it's at PC2100 which is the BARE minium you would get for a new computer today) isn't good for gaming, nor is the Ti200. The 1600+ might be ok for now, but in several months when newer games come out it wont be.Quote:

Even if you have to buy completely new equipment for everything, including a monitor and speakers, $3000 is insane. Then again some people are stupid enough to pay $3500-$4000 for a top of the line PC that should be around $2000 because they want the nice 'Alienware' or "VoodooPC" on their case.
$3000 for a computer is not insane. Lets see how much I paid for a homebuilt PC not a PreBuilt

EDIT: Granted a lot of the items are over kill. You can deduct about $800 by not getting 4 drives, SCSI CDRW, SCSI Card, External Drive and only 512MB of ram instead of 1GB.
All of that without a Radeon 9700 pro hehe...I still think that is insane for me. For example I dont need 4 80gb HDD's, 1 60gb is enough for me. 512mb is plenty, as I can always add 256mb if needed.

My video card was bought before the release of the Radeon 9700. Plus I was never a big ATI fan. I am still not getting one, other wise I would be using one now. They dont cost that much, my vendor sells them to me at $223ea (ATI Radeon 9700 Pro Retail).
EDIT: All that matters in putting a system together is that you are happy with it. I needed the extra space for the massive mp3 and divx collection I have.
My setup does everything I need it to do and more. I wouldnt trade it for anything!.... Well almost anything...
Note I said "fairly decent"..I didn't say it was top of the line. Back in July, I was running a 1Ghz Tbird with a Kyro II..I ran MOHAA, RTCW, etc..MOHAA got a little choppy, but it was playable. Not everybody has to play in 1600x1200x32 at 75fps. :)Quote:

Exactly, not everyone here is made out olf money. I ran my 800MHz Athlon for 18 months and I didnt have any major problems with it. I still run my GF2 MX and play games like BF 1942, just not insane resolutions. You guys can upgrade all the time if you need the best, but most people here do not have the funds to do that.Quote:

If I wanted to go crazy with it, I would've gone quad Xeons, SCSI RAID, multiple 22"+ LCDs..etc. :D
Quad Xeon for under $5000? I know someone is smoking. That alone would cost you around 3K with a Quad mobo. Not much for other items now is there?
Where did I say quad Xeon for $5000? When I made this list, I just chose a ton of stuff off Newegg (dual processors, four 200Gb HDs, etc), and my total came out to approximately $5000. I did not start out thinking "What can I get for $5k"...it's what I ended up with. If I selected quad Xeon, [obviously] it would've been considerably more.Quote:

I have now started one now that is likely to hit the 5K mark after I get the monitor ( a 42" LCD or DLP set).
