are you mostly into adventure/action type anime or cute type anime?
the evangelion series is really great and really twisted. if you like what gainax does(makers of eva) and you like funny stuff, check out "flcl" also know as "furi-kuri". it's one of the best anime ever.
a classic is the macross series, macross plus is really good. lain is really awesome, but a little slow. pretty twisted like eva.
if you like princess mononoke(mononoke hime) check out spirited away when it comes to theaters :D also most of studio ghibli's stuff is great. they did warriors of the wind(naussicaa) and my neighbor totoro, as well as kiki's delivery service.
if you are into that kind of stuff, cardcaptor sakura is really good. the american bastardized version is called cardcaptors and if you could see the difference between the two, you'd think it was a crime what warner brothers did.
another really good anime series is called "orphen" and the entired "slayers" series is just hilarious!
if you ever want any more info on anime, drop me a message or icq me at 41888081. if you have a fast connection i'll hook you up with some good fansubs for stuff like hikaru no go and alien09. :D
forgot to mention, if you like comics, there's some scanned manga at www.toriyamaworld.com
i'm currently reading the hikaru no go series. it's pretty awesome, especially how it pumps you up about "go" :D
omg! how could i forget?!? you have to watch Trigun and Cowboy bebop. outlaw star is great too :D
this will henceforth be known as the anime discussion thread! :D I grew up in the northeast portion of the USA and apparently they aired a few anime type series here during the 80's that laregly weren't shown at all throughout most of America. I grew up watching star blazers, captian mask(can't remember what that show was called but it was a giant mecca show), and a cool show called force 5 which had one of my favorites of all time called Gaiking. Sadly it's almost impossible to find those shows now other than star blazers, Id love to get Gaiking on DVD.
i'd say im not so much into cute anime, princess mononoke was ok and I plan on getting spirited away when it comes to DVD because I hear its very good (although I also heard that about mononoke and I wasn't hugely impressed).
Ive seen an episode of cowboy bepop, I think they show that on toonami or sci fi once in awhile but I can never find the schedule. It looks cool, after EVA I might try to see that entire series. I think they also show outlaw star but I have no idea what thats about, and ive never heard of trigun. I hear macross is one of the best anime series ever made, but isn't there like a million episodes? Not sure I even want to get into that, would cost a fortune to collect it, and I have this feeling that the emphasis is too much on mechs and not enough on plot, storyline, charachter development etc.
I've read article after article about EVA and have seen episodes 1-6. what appeals to me about that is the deep and intricate storyline, the interesting use of relgious and mythological symbolisms and metaphors, the though provoking philosophical ponderings that the subject matter evokes, the attention to developing deep and believable characthers and the sci fi/fantasy setting that serves as EVAs backdrop. This is considered cerebral or intellectual anime, and thats more appealing than fluffy plots. will get it today and probably start watching it.
there's like 36episodes to macross i think. you really dont have to watch macross to see macross plus though. it's a 4 part series, and comes on 2 dvds. also about cute anime, i know it's not everyone's thing, but dont knock it ;) a lot of them tend to have very good stories like CCS, but they dont go all psychological like eva does. (btw, the cross shaped explosions were stupid, but everything else rocked :D)Quote:

if you really like that kind of story, serial experiments lain will rock your world :D
as far as the toonami stuff that comes on, to get the real experience, you have to watch it subtitled, not english dubbed ;) i'm suprised they havent showed trigun yet. it's one of the best anime out there :) here's a brief description: http://www.uk-anime.net/lockon/trigun.html
http://www.uk-anime.net/review-images/trigun.gif
i dont know about that, EVA is supposed to have really great dubbing. also i dont know about that trigun series, anything that is supposed to be funny or comical in anime always comes off as pretty bad. comedy and easy going anime isn't really my style.
bummer :(Quote:

to each his own i guess ;)
hehe, but one day i hope you'll learn, just as i have my son, that subbed is way better than dubbed... i probably spent $400 on anime all dubbed, and i really regret it now :( fortunately, a few dvds offer both japanese and english audio ;)
also, before you pass judgement on comical anime, you gotta see ranma 1/2
it's one of the few anime that is actually good subbed and dubbed ;)
I would eva to the list of good dubs, and iv'e looked at it dubbed theres no way anyone can read that fast in some of the quicker moving scenes. I watched EVA most of the day and am on episode 21 I think. This is getting pretty weird, but then again I expected a bizzare series so its living up to its hype. cant wait to find out how it ends, waiting for the 2 movies to get here in the mail this week so I can see the alternate endings.
omg, you think it's weird now -_-Quote:

the "alternate" endings were made because the last episode didnt come across well with the fans. they felt it wasnt conclusive enough. the movies are pretty damn conclusive and sad and twisted
hehe before I started watching this series I downloaded a queen video, bohemian rhapsody set to images of EVA. Now that ive seen alot of the series I have some predictions that i'll look back tommorrow after I finish and see how accurate they were. Seeing this video suggested some things, but context is everything.
I think Rei is artifcial, perhaps even an angel. I saw footage of her killing some people, so I think maybe she was feeding on them, or maybe protecting herself. I think maybe she is the white figure of a women being born out of the planet earth I saw. I'm not sure who had the huge white female face with glowing red eyes, maybe rei again. shes not what she seems I know that, I saw her arm fall off in the video. I think all the angels kill themselves at the end, maybe they finally see something in humanity they misjudged and worth saving. I think maybe shinji proves humans worth to the angels, maybe through some heroic or sacficial act.
there is a haunting scene I saw in that video where it looks like shinji is looking through a window or at a reflection of a naked woman who is disintegrating before his eyes and covered with blood. the look on his eyes is one of shock, disbelief and intense sadness... I'd say it was Rei disintegrating but the womans hair wasn't blue... maybe shinjis mom?
Anyways I'm not gonna check back here till im done watching the series, will have to wait for the movies. be interesting to see how right I am, or how wrong.
Well I finished watching the series, and most of my thoughts were wrong. I think alot of the footage I saw in the music video was from the 2 movies.
As for the series, I had heard that the last couple episodes made no sense but I was hoping I'd be able to figure it out. It really didn't make much sense. But beyond that, there were a number of things that didn't seem well explained during the series, kind of loose ties if you will. I will list a few of these:
1. the second impact was never explained, adam was involved and somehow misatos father put her in an escape pod before a glowing giant(maybe adam) ripped the roof off the facility and possibly exploded. Very little of the background surrounding the second impact was explained.
2. The angels were never explained, still not sure what they were(alien race?). The last angel was a human. They also seemed like they were trying to merge with a human to understand us. why?
3. Never fully explained what Rei actually was, an empty vessel with a false soul? Was she ever a real human? Was she modeled after her mom? was her mom the same as shinjis mom, are they siblings?
4. no explanation of how shinjis mom died, other than a freak accident. it was suggested that shinjis dad had something to do with it.
5. what was seele, what were those talking black pillars? computers?
6. what were the sea scrolls and the prophecies? they were never explained.
7. what was shindo ikaris'(shinjis dad) motives, what was he ploting behind the backs of seele?
8. What exactly were the evangelions, somehow descended from the first angel adam, or were they a mix of angel biology and technology.
9. what exactly was this human intrumentation project?
10. the spear of longinus was never explained, what was it, where did it come from, and why was it stuck inside adam?
11. the last angel speaks of lilith and lili when he enters the door of heaven and confronts adam. lilith is part of creationst mythology, she was adams first companion before eve. lilith became a demon and created 1000's of other demons named lili. are the angels actually just lili, or demons? are they saying angels and demons are somehow related. this wasn't explained!
12. some of the footage in the opening sequence to the show features events that dont take place during the series. does this additional footage finally happen during the movies?
The obvious other question is, what happens next? I hope the movies explain some of this and answer some questions, because i'm not stupid and alot of that stuff escaped me.
hehe, yeah, a lot of the assumptions were wrong, but i could see where they were coming from. this show has so many twists in it, it's rediculous. the biggest twist being at the end of the movies :DQuote:

i'm just not going to say anything about it till you watch the 2 movies. they explain a lot about rei among other things.
but as for screen capturing, ati's video player software has a button on it that will take a screen of the pic.
last i checked, it's at a specific size and doesnt let you capture full screen...Quote:
