If you haven't turned off Windows XP's built-in software firewall, it won't respond to ping requests. To turn it off, right-click My Network Places and select Properties. Then select your network connection, right-click it, and choose Properties once again. Go to the Advanced tab and de-select the box for Internet Connection Firewall.
DHCP will work fine. If you aren't sure, double check the scope being assigned by your router. You should also be able to log into it and see what DHCP leases are currently assigned, or just open a command prompt on each system and type "ipconfig" to be sure you're pinging the correct IPs.Quote:

they can both ping the router fine, which is .01 by default.
Firewalls are off. Logged into the router and it shows both devices and now all of a sudden it has decided that they can ping each other. :D
So now back to the permissions ;)

Yup, that's what i'm working by, except when i try to add the user to the allow netowrk access section, i go to add user or group, and type in ARCTURUS\Ab (comp name\user), it asks for a username and password, enter those, and then I get a Name not found error... i tried creating a new account and still have the same problem
You don't need to add a user from the remote system, just create an account on the local system with an identical username/password as the account on the remote box, then add that account to the "Allow access from the network" section and give it rights to the local shares.Quote:

Tried that and it doesn't seem to be working. A friend of mine offered to sell me his copy of PCAnywhere for $20. Would that be easier, and more secure? Btw, thanks so much for all the help, when i tried calling netgear they told me to call microsoft and microsoft told me to call netgear :/
Never used PCAnywhere myself, but I've used Terminal Services clients(basically the same thing) plenty of times. If you're just trying to share files I think you should save your $20. What happens when your on computerA and you go to Start-Run, and type "\\computerB\Share"? What about "\\IP Address\Share"? Are you prompted for a password or do you get an error?Quote:

If your computers can ping each other NetGear's job is done, and I'm not surprised that MS would blame a piece of hardware between the systems.
I get the logon failure message. When i try to add a user in the secpol.msc, I get prompted for a password, enter in Admin and password so i know that user has access to policies etc, and then I get the error that the object doesn't exist. Tried it as CompName\UserName as well as IP\UserName. Also when i go to run and try compname or ip i get that the user does not have the access permissions.

Ahh.... Ok. You only need to add local accounts(or groups). When you've got two identical accounts with identical passwords, you'll authenticate to the remote system since the account and password you're using will be recognized as a local account by the remote machine, and you'll have all the rights of said local account on the remote machine. I'm probably making this more complicated that it really is since I've tried explaining it too many differnet ways... :)Quote:

BloodRed you are the man (or woman, who can tell really ;). I had to run compmgmt.msc 'cause it occured to me when i was changing my name it wasn't turning the right thing, and turns out it would change my full name but not the user name when you do it from users. So really the two accounts weren't identical, one had a middle initial and one didn't, but everything is working perfectly now. Thanks a TON! I always knew sharkyforums was the best techsupport. :D
