Good choice. Even if the 9700 is a big step forward, I don't think it's big enough. Personally I skip every 2 generations of cards. I had a Radeon 256 and then got a 9700 along with a new system.
You should be just fine until the R400/NV35.

well there are 2 ways you can play this
1/ get some good cash out of your 4400 while is it still worth a good chunk of cash
or
2/ ride out the 4400 until DX9 games are common
personally i own a 9500PRO but i was upgrading from a geforce2mx
if i were you there is NO way i would upgrade from a damn good ti4400 to anything right now unless you got a good chunk of change out of your ti card
