Intel developed USB, Serial ATA, x86, AGP and many other things without competition from AMD or any other company. Intel develops new technologies and increases speed of its processors so they keep up with software and other parts of the computer, Intel is also one of those rare companies who also cares about advancing computers for the good of all of us and yes aswell as to make more money. If Intel was still at 1000mhz they wouldn't be selling nearly as many CPU’s as they do today because no one would have a reason to upgrade. To be 100% honest If AMD wasn't around right now Intel would be in the same position as they are in now with pretty much the same speed CPU's.

First of all Intel hasn't officially named Prescott the Pentium5 and until they do name it that it’s nothing then rumors. If they decide to name it the Pentium5 it will be so that they can make the average Joe want to buy a P5 and upgrade from his P4. Intel's naming schemes have nothing to do with AMD. Prescott will have huge changes over Northwood (1mb L2, HT-2, 16kb l1, and many other small changes) these can easily warrant a name change.
I feel I must remind you that AMD changed the Athlons name to AthlonXP after adding nothing more then SSE to the core (which Intel developed imo). If Intel feels the new changes warrant a new name then that’s their choice and is no more misleading then AMD tricking people with their rating system or snagging some marketing points from windowsXP.

Umm hello i didnt try to take credit away from intel all i said was that they are changing the name for marketing reasons and that those reasons include AMDs K8. People go to the store they see p4 which they might already have and then they see the A64 which a brand new name hence the consumer thinks it has more performance and is better than there curretn where as if intel relases P5 then people look and say wow 2 brand new names i guess ill go with the same brand as last time, as it is working fine.

Oh and quit trying to make Intel sound like this boyscout company that is doing great things for us simply to advance technology your paragraph went on and on abotu how many greta things they have done and that they do it for the betterment of technology and you once mention money.

And you make it sound like them and them alone created all those things well the truth is many many comapanies including IBM AMD VIA and many other worked with Intel to creat those things. And alot of the time AMD created rival standards to go along with Intels but due to Intel ability to push its tech into the market AMD has little choice but to follow.

As for your comments on the Athlon naming scheem i really dotn see what your trying to point out i mean i am perfectly aware of the marketing benefit in doing this and i just said that making the prescott the P5 was marketing as well.

AMD holds around 20% of the computer industry at any give time leaving Intel with abotu 80% give or take a few for the other cpus makers. Of course in this posistion Intel hold most of the power but they have to continue to hold this power. Intel has to move with AMD and AMD has to move with Intel. If Intel were death to AMD then Intel would be making a drastic mistake. It isnt as if Intel sits on its mountain all high and mighty and doesnt pay attention to whats happening. You guys all need to except that market share can go up if Intel doesnt counter AMDs moves its not like Intel is invincible they make a few mistakes and AMD will gain ground it is as simple as that and the best way for Intel to not make mistakes sometimes is to do just what AMD does in effect blocking there moves.

As for your comments on CPUs and stuff well you couldnt give a rats *** about AMD and you know that and you have not once made a comment in AMDs favour. Do i have a problme with your not liking AMD NO. i do have a problem with your being so couter productive though. You simply sit here and as soon as somethign about Intel comes up you chime in and Basically say nothing other than Intel is god and AMD will forever be dirt.

AMD does something for me too they give me cheap working reliable highly overclockable cpus. Is it to make money yes but it is also for me because the world is 2 sided as long as the buissness helps the consumer it is helping itself.

Where did you get that I didn't like AMD? My home gaming/workstation is AMD right now and has been for some time. The only Intel products I own are a laptop and this web surfing computer. I think it’s funny that you mention that I don't make good comments towards AMD, seriously why do I need to compliment them? AMD is a company not a person and they don't need or want my compliments.
Intel has done some bad things in the past but if you ever took the time to listen to their CEO's and designers you would realize that unlike other companies while their #1 goal is to make money they’re more enthusiastic about advancing computer hardware at least that’s my take on them. The reason I speak highly of Intel is because they give me reasons to all the time.
You need to stop acting like AMD is a member of your family they are just a company and nothing more. Don't take this stuff so personally.

Thats the last thing AMD wants to do. Buying a 1700 or 2100+ isn't helping AMD, if anything they are losing money on those chips. The same goes for Intel because the tech is advancing so fast we are geting our hands on cheaper and cheaper chips which are really flagship chips which have been remarked. Its good for us yes but if you really wanted to support a company and have them be successful you would buy their flagship cpu.

Ok i get the feeling that you dislike AMD becuase in 90% of your posts in this forum you are saying how Intel is so much better. Oh and i dont treat AMD like it is a member of my family. I own a few Intel machines myself. Sure i praise them alittle and i yell at people who think that AMD is completely subpar crap which is alot of users around here.

Sry if i miss judeged you but i just never see you psot a single thing here about AMD unless they have bad news then you jump right in and say it figures and how Intel is better.

As far as Intel excited about new tech well what are they supposed to do go out and say well we have this new thing to take your money its called the pentium 5 and we only designed it so we can make more and more money. Heck AMD is the same they act excited and stuff but in reality a company is not just the way the CEO acts.

Putting everything aside. They could name it the pentiumXP SP2. :) Along side the big HT patch that microsoft is supposedly bundeling with sp2, there could be some major improvements to be had.

The funny thing is this thread is about Intel and its possible naming of prescott and somehow some one not me had to bring AMD into it. I almost never post in AMD/Intel threads.

Yah i mention that Intel is probably calling it P5 because it only makes sense that if AMD has a new name Intel should everyone else agrees why not you? And then you call me completely wrong and go off on your Intel cant be touched things so i decied to respond. Dont make me out ot be the bad guy here. If you think Intel isnt effected by AMD lets leave it at that i dont care to argue.

As for the name i am still not 100% positive they will go ahead with the P4 simply because i think they might get some rough criticism for it. Why? Well many review sites complain to death about the AMD naming scheme and if Intel releases this and tries to sale it to the public as a brand new core then they might get some kind of rough criticism. Also Tejas will be equally great and to still its thunder now might be a mistake sense it will be released relatively soon after. Also antother thing to keep in mind is that it might make more sense to introduce the new name with a new socket like they did with P4. Well anyway time can only tell.

Intel is still debating, but good chance itll be called a pentium5 or maybe at least a pentium4 pro or pentium4 enhanced ;)
