New batch of IBM/Hitachi drives

Now what really sucks is that I think one of my 200GB WD SE is failing already.. Its not even what 2 months old? Maybe 3?

My choices for HDD is limited :( I dont like Maxtor... Crappy 1 year warranty... I dont like Seagate...

I wanted some 180GXP but I dont like Hitachi.. I guess I always hated my Thinkpad 600e HDD... (which was a hitachi!)

So now I am SOL... I guess I can move back to Seagate Cheetahs.. AS long as I dont get a crappy box load of them again!!!!

Yeah, get cheetahs, they are the best you can get.

Sometimes the curiosity gets the best of me...

But, I did go with cheetahs before.. I had so many that failed within a few months that it just sucked! I sold the rest of them off and never used them again in any server built since then...

It just pissed me off.. I have had decent luck with Cheetahs before.. I had some fail before.. Like all drives... And well before 5 years of use :D

I replaced so many Seagate Barracuda and Cheetahs in my NSE role in the private sector that its not even funny!

how long did it take for them to die? I have had my B4 for a year, it is fine, we will see. But Seagate seem to have the best reputation for staying alive so I went with that.

However the Seagate drives I bought last year were died within 3 months of use... Some died 2 weeks later... I was very disappointed!

Most of the Barracuda drives I had replaced in the past were older drives.. Probably around 3 years old or so...

I guess I am glad that I own a DLT tape drive and I keep my backup current... I would hate to lose my financial data or any other important data..

yeah, that would be really bad. my dad has a tape drives hooked up @ his work for that stuff. I just manually mirror my stuff over my 3 disks (15K.3, Barracuda 4 and Barracuda 7200.7, also the WDSE in the old P2 box). The media and stuff (mp3s, divx) only gets mirrored onces, but code, school work, and tutorials [example: this awesome pdf about big O I found] get mirros on everything.

Its amazing what one finds on the net.. I found a 200 page pdf manual on growing the best buds ROFL

Not that I would.. But I just find it funny.. Heck I owned the Cookbook since 1994 ROFL

simplistic definition: way of showing the efficiency of an algorythm.

example:

O(1): programmer's wet dream, any operation take the same ammount of time.

a sequantial search is O(n) (seraches every element in an array or list until it find the desired element).

a binary search is O(log(n)) goes through an array through a sorted array and eliminates half of the array of undesiables

merge sort is O(nlog(n)) (a pretty efficient sorting algorhythm)

I've sent back no less than FOUR IBM drives due to failure... 2 were mine and 2 were from a friend of mine's whose computer I built.

And now 2 of the replacement drives have gone bad as well.

I'm on Western Digital now and NO problems whatsoever... no more IBM for me.

Heh, then your first wd dies and you go Seagate (j/k, no problems here w/ wd, but I only own one 80gb se).

I have also never had any issues with IBM, owned a 60GXP never any problems. Now I have a 180GXP still no problems, very fast and quiet. On the other hand, I have had 3 Maxtor Drives fail on me and will never buy Maxtor ever again.

recent article in Maximum PC about IBM getting sued up the wazzoo because they knowingly shipped out drives that had as high as a 17 percent failure rate!!

wonder if it's Hitachi's headache now...
