ram on the ti500 overheating?

T-Bird if 3.3ms memory is limited to 600mhz how come my 4ns memory can do 640mhz and I have even seen where others have gotten upto 680mhz and higher. With 3.3mhz ram, that is why the 4200`s with 3.3ns ram can get upto the same speeds on memory as the 4600`s because it is the same memory.

I have no clue how 4ns ram can do 640MHz, perhaps a volt mod? I had a 128mb ti4200 with 4ns ram and she would hardly do 520MHz, another one with 3.5ns and she did 560MHz. Perhaps its the quality of the ram that matters more than the ns rating anyhow. I have seen pc2100 ram do 200fsb, seriously. and ti4600s overclock too, although usually much less percentage wise. Youd need a really good ti4200 to hit ti4600 speeds, such as an albatron turbro or those with the a3 core steppings, fast ram, and a manufactor that volts the ram higher than others, that matters alot too. Perhaps the ti4200s I had whos ram was a little undervolted? a v mod probably could gain me like 50MHz more. Reguardless, BGA ram can do higher MHz than tsop ram, ill be supprised if the ti4200 I get from him does higher than 310/640

T-Bird I have don`t no volt mod`s on my video card or nothing else, just to risky for me, it appears I have just the regular Samsung memory. I know its not BGA. I believe the BGA ram is small and square whereas mine is retangular. I believe as soon as cooler weather gets here I should be able to get even higher. I guess you have had bad luck getting video cards that don`t overclock too well. If the video card you are getting has 3.3ns ram on it and it don`t overclock better then mine, then IMO I would have to say there is something wrong with it.

wait, yours is also 64mb? those should come at 3.6ns 3.5ns and 3.3ns are what I heard of. How do you know yours is 4ns? does it say at the end of the writing? If so, my mx440 has 5ns ram clocked at 400MHz, yet overclocks to 550!!!!!!! I was like wow! anyway he says I should expect around 620MHz on the ram, 660 with tweakmonster sinks. could ramsinks make 40MHz difference?

I won't say never, but in almost all situations RAMsinks will not give you an additional 40MHz. 10 - 15MHz sounds about right.

i think 40Mhz is way too optimistic for adding ramsinks....i personally wouldn't expect more than 10Mhz from adding sinks

No, I checked the writing on my ram and it is just 4ns and yes ram heatsinks will help you get a better overclock on your ram. My video card is clocked at 250/500 stock, most of the 4200 128mb`s that were not 8x were clocked at 250/444. also to my knowledge the only 4200`s that come with the faster ram were the ones with 128mb`s of ram.

actually the 64MB versions were the ones that had the faster ram, but the 128mb cards perform a lot better in newer games than the 64mb cards do, so the extra memory speed isn't much good, because you simply need more video memory.

Yes, the 4200`s with 64mb memory has faster memory then the 128mb vc`s with the 444mhz memorey, but that changed when they come out with the 4200`s with 128mb with 8x support and are clocked at 500mhz. The 4200 128mb`s I was talking about was the ones that they made with the 3.3ns ram and charged a arm and leg for. ;) Also I have never seen a 4200 with 64mb`s of memory with faster ram then 4ns.

Maybe he was doing something wrong, he said he had 620 on the ram, then 660 after ramsinks. Maybe he didnt max it out before ramsinks. I didnt want to pay $25 for tweaksinks. besides his card comes with stock ramsinks, those alone should help a bit, if I get the ram to 640 with those, the tweaksinks may get me to 650, not worth $25, I can tell you that! Ill let ya guys know how far it overclocks though. can a ti4200 really do 320 on the core? thats an INSANELY high overclock man. I dont even know if itll do 300MHz stable without locking up after 15 min, ive never seen a ti4200 do 300MHz on the core without a v mod and excellent cooling, ill be supprised if mine does over 300MHz. actually my gainward ti4200 does 300MHz on the core with very minor artifacts but it locks up above 280MHz. I wouldnt be very happy if his wouldnt do 300/600, he said he only guarantees it on his computer. could the card being in different computers actually matter? I want to make the ti4200 from him the last one ill buy. as for the extra ram, it wont matter in 3dmark and todays game and I wont be running 1600x1200 either anyway so 64 is enough! and most 64mb ti4200s come with 3.6ns

my old ti500 would 273/604 on my 8kha+ board, but will only do 265/595 on this 8rda, so from my experience the motherboard can affect your max overclock on the card...

<10MHz isnt anything to sweat. this means 290/590 as a worst case scinerio for the ti4200 I buy since he has his at 300/600 and didnt try for higher. Heck maybe my mobo would gain me 5MHz LOL

T-Bird, I've told you over and over that the A3 cores of the GeForce4 Ti could almost always hit 300MHz. It's similar to how almost all B0 1.8A Pentium 4's could hit 2.4GHz rock solid stable.

My thoughts on RAM ratings.

Just because RAM is rating at a certain speed it doesn't mean it won't go any faster. It might even be a higher quality part repackaged at a lower rating just sold to meet demand.

I'm going to try my heart out to come close to 16k with my ti4800se.... I don't think its possible but Fook it, I have a zalman and ramsinks coming..... and two 120mm fans. I need to put my new system together quik when it gets here....

its said i bought a card just to see what it can do.... already have a 9800 non pro coming :)
