Hey, it's not like it takes some special talent or anything - just got a great card (I mean, really, 490/400 on ghetto aircooling [check out this thread] has GOT to be a kickass OCer)!

With ramsinks (that I bought from Radio Shack for $3, mind you), I can push it up to 405mhz. Haven't tried going further because of artifacts - with better ramsinks/ram cooling, I don't think 410 is out of reach.

I dont know if I agree with the higher death rate or artifact rate in ATI then nVidia...

I have worked with 2 nVidia cards for extreme overclocking and 3 ATI cards...

I noticed that ATI cards (well the 9700 series) will artifact in a xmas tree effect while the 9800 series only has white dots.. Which is odd.. :D

But IMO they both will die just as hard as the next.. I have had my ATI (new one) got artifact for a few hours but after keeping it off for an hour or two.. It would go back to normal... Sadly that didnt happen with my last card :(

Also to clarify the dead of my loved one... I never overclock my video card 24/7, I never had too... The 9800 Pro is more then powerful enough by itself for any game I have played to date.. Even now while I am playing Star Wars Academy :)

The only part of my computer that is overclocked 24/7 is my CPU..

Also AGP voltage does NOT affect GPU/mem voltages... But it might help increase the voltage to your NB...

I am almost tempted to drop my older V7+ onto my 9800Pro and push for 500Mhz on the core :D :D

I think the "C" guy kept pushing the core, despite heavy artifacts. It died before completing the nature test too. can anyone confirm the fact ati cards cant handle overclocking well? so if you oc both cards to the max and back off 5MHz core/ram how much sooner will the ati card quit?

I have let Nvidia cards complete 3dmark with light artifacts, but always aborted when they got heavy.

no what triggered this useful thread was I never knew ati cards hate being overclocked and I wanted to see the experiences of others. I plan to run games with my ti4200 overclocked. obviously a stock 9800 pro is more than enough for games, but a slower card overclocked way up gets you far more bang for the buck than running a high end card at bone stock cause it hates being oced. also I told lostlilchild to oc his card to the max just for a 3dmark run, when he declined, this meant he feared he could damage his card, I told him oc in 5MHz and the moment it artifacts, abort 3dmark and back off a bit.....

me neither, hence why I made this thread. if ati had higher death rates, wouldnt this infer that ati's quality is lower and they cant be pushed? I have never fried a card before, even with heavy artifacts, would I be any more likley to fry an ati card than Nvidia card if I do what I always do: oc a bit, benchmark, oc a bit more, etc.

heh nice visuals though. are you talking the ram? I had a tnt2 pro whos ram I think I got 210+ then quake3 artifacted like xmas lights, there were elementary colored dots(blue, green, yellow, red, purple, cyan, megenta, orange) all over the walls, floors and ceiling, it looked really pretty then it locked up :(

ouch how did that happen? did you push the core more and more even when it begin to artifact or was it just 5MHz too much, as in 5MHz less shows no artifacts? Ive always had slight artifacts if im 5MHz too much, clocking it down fixes that.

you really should beat lostlilchild's score, your oc of both cpu and gpu is higher than his too :eek:

I know why: colossus had 242fsb or 3.4GHz while lostlil had 250fsb or 3.5GHz. In your sig, Colossus, your fsb is above that, are you unable to complete 3dmark or just never got the time to? :) yea I know im such a 3dmark whore I probably care more about your scores than you do, ironic I know :)

I have already broke 21k :) I just never uploaded the score since I wanted to get it higher :( The 208xx score was a pretest of the newer 3.6 cats... The 21k score I had was on the 3.4 cats...

I have some new hardware sitting in boxes that I should test.. But just never had the downtime to take my main home machine offline for that amount of time :(

I just dont care for 3DMarking as much recently.. I have so much going on in my life now that its a back burner type thing...

Heck I have 3 Canterwood boards sitting in boxes right next to me :D :D Never even opened, How sad :(

The xmas tree artifacts on the 9700 series and maybe 9500 series (not sure) was due to a high core overclock... Both 9700 and 9800 series will show sharp lightning bolts if the mem is pushed to hard...

Yeah this is BS.

I have my cards core and mem overvolted 24/7 and overclocked to 483/375 24/7. It has not died yet and does not artifact.

This is what I have noticed on my 9800:

Overclock the core to far and you get white dots, even further and you get LOTS of white dots, go beyond that and you will actually see a checkerboard pattern of white dots all over the screen.

Overclock the mem too far and you get what Colossus noticed, lightning bolts across the sceen of various colors. They look like skinny triangles shooting off of objects. If you go even further these triangles will almost obscure the entire screen. I never went further than that lol!:)

So basically I pushed this thing to hell and back and continue to give it hell 24/7. It almost died on me after my mem Vmod but it came back to life in perfect condition. I still don't fully understand that one.

My 8500 did it after a firmware update. Even going back and underclocking never fixed it. It only happend in certain circumstances.

Alright... check this out guys. I've only owned 2 cards from the 9700 series... a 9700PRO, and a 9800PRO. Both of which I NEVER overclock during 24/7 operation. Quite frankly, you dont need to, they are fast enough.


The whole ATi OC'ing death thing dates back to the 8500 era... now many of you from today, probably haven't owned one. But just ask Mystif... he'll tell ya ;). He owned quite a few of them. So I guess one would need to be a pioneer to these forums to really understand what Im talking about? :D And of course.... Tbird like's to twist words around ;).

Ummm... no It didn't. :confused: Tbird... I've told you many times before.... I, unlike you, have a life and would much rather use my PC for what I bought it for. 3Dmark is a "cool" spurr of the moment type thing. Im not a big fan of those 3dmark seasons, because I get to use my PC less and less :(. See, you dont care because all you do is 3dmark.... so that's all on you. So dont try to put words in my mouth ;).

It happens when people try to push the core/mem to 300/300 and some push it further. I still have mine OCed at 285/300, on 24/7, retail fan, used bios flash. For the 8500s the bios flash is the way to go.

8500 stock is 275/275.... you push it to 300/300+ you run high risks. And many poeple refrain from running this 24/7 because, of course, you could damage your card. However... a TI4600... 300/650 stock speeds. I ran it 335/735 24/7 for 95% of the time I owned it...and still no problems.

well i keep my overclocked video card 24/7 its not as fast as my max overclock (470/350) but right now its at 460/340 all the time, because its stable, why overclock? just for bunchies? i mean the reasons i overclock is to have highest preformance out of my system ALL the time.. so i get the highest overclock i possibaly can

I was pointing out that the bios flash is the way to go, 'cause most of the people who fried there 8500s didn't flash the bios to OC. I'm not too sure about the limits with Nvidia cards, but I'm sure that there's a level where if you keep it clocked that high, it will eventually fry. That goes for any card. I guess we both got lucky with our purchases. :D

Well, to add to this li'l "discussion"...

My FIC A97 (Radeon 9700 non-pro) started to develop 2D artifacts. It has been one of the worst overclocking experience ever!! It doesn't want to overclock at all!! Just stock speeds... I am in the process of RMA'ing the card and it's sooooooo slow as I think there's only one person working that department here in US!! My previous Radeon 8500LE wasn't a good overclocker either... but it never crapped out on me like this FIC card!! All I can hope is that this RMA will go smoothly...
