I totally agree with you, ryandinan!
To those people who whine and cry, would you rather play a game full of bugs right now or a game without bugs later?
I prefer waiting a bit for the bugs to be removed.

Valve simply ****ed up on this one and they know it. I'm not upset that it didn't get released so saying I'm crying about it is stupid, I'm upset they said it would be out at a certain date then didn't release it. Valve are dumasses, Carmack is smart, he's given no release date for Doom 3 at all so no one has anything to cry about.Quote:

I do agree that it was a bit strange to wait until the last minute before saying anything, but they definitely did not screw us by doing so. Sure, it was disappointing. But, we can only speculate why there was a delay. And I'm sure it was for good reason. Do you actually think they wanted to break their deadline? Of course not! They're in the business to make and sell games - not to piss off customers on purpose!
Pushing the release date back can only help us not get screwed. If they chose to release it on Sept 30th, and it was full of bugs and problems, you'd have a ton of really pissed off people claiming that Valve screwed them.
Basically, Valve made a mistake by saying a specific date. The fact that they stuck to it until the last minute tells me that something happened that was unforseen, or out of their control (Vivendi's fault perhaps?). But Valve did not screw us. So the game isn't here yet. Big freakin' deal. How does that screw you? And don't give me any excuses like "I bought new computer parts just to play this game, and now that it's pushed back, I wasted all this money...wahh whaaaa...I would have waited, whaaaa...."
Please...

Hey guys, lighten up, after all, it's ONLY a game! *ducks under bed for cover*:p I feel the real cause of the delay boils down to Valve having to code the game to run well on nVidia FX cards, soooo....., let's bash nVidia instead.:p :D :DQuote:

I think we've bashed them enough.
We should spend time concentrating on other stuff.
while I agree that a bug filled game is no fun...and if they have to delay it to get rid of them then that's cool too...but what let's everyone down is that they announce it 6 days before the intended release date...what irks me even more is that 2 weeks before the announcement they were proclaiming that a release on the 30th was very possible and in every statement they said there wasn't any doubt in them...I mean come on...you would know 2 weeks before the release that it'll be done or not...they said they were going though final playtesting...final playtesting is for finding small little bugs...the chances of finding a critical major bug in final playtesting is slim...my guess is that they totally underestimated how terrible steam will and can be...with the release of the offical steam clients and having people (ex me) not being able to use it for over a week is pretty craptastic to me...and with steam being a big part of half-life 2 then I think they decided to push it back...despite having half-life 2 complete...and went back to the drawing board with steam...think about it...steam is released...they see how it works out...it does terrible...they delay...it may seem crazy but that's just what I believe...anyways why they didn't release the benchmark on the 30th is beyond me really...oh and sorry for the thread hijacking :)
Nobody should be making excuses for Valve. They essentially lied to everyone by pretending they could make the stated release date. The sad part is that Vivendi was more honest than Valve.
Are Valve the only ones to not make a stated release date? Come on...give them a break. They were not "pretending" to make a stated realease date. Why would they do that? The only thing that would do is make people, like us, mad at them. This is not good for business now or in the future. Companies give out relase dates thinking that they really, and truly, can make the stated dates. Unfortunately, as we all know, this is often not the case with last minute problems coming up that end up pushing release dates back. Lets just give them a bit of slack and see what happens from here.Quote:

I don't think it has anything to do with Steam...Quote:

But I think it has everything to do with Vivendi. Valve would not hold back the game because Steam wasn't working up to their expectations. They'd probably release the game to stores, and provide patches in the traditional manner until Steam issues were worked out - Then they would roll out the Steam ordering option.
I think the game is pretty much "done". What's holding it back is not yet known. It's got to be something political for it to be this tight-lipped.

Valve didn't just miss their release date; they were completely dishonest about it. They knew they weren't going to make it. Gabe even admitted this in a recent interview. They'd make condescending comments about Viviendi knowing full well that Vivendi was right. I personally don't care if HL2 is delayed until next year since I expect it to be more of a techdemo than a game. I just don't see why people feel the need to defend Valve.

Just be happy this isn't another Duke Nukem Forever.
This is obviously an NVIDIA conspiracy!
NVIDIA knew its Det 50's would be late, and they need them for decent performance in HL2. They slip Gabe and/or Vivendi some money, and presto! The HL2 benchmark is inexplicably delayed! The best part is, of course, that after Gabe's comments about NVIDIA, nobody would ever suspect NVIDIA of doing it!
Until now, that is. ;)

Hey anything is possible, just not probable. As much as Id like to see the Det 50s save nvidia on this one Im pretty sure it wont happen. And if thats the case nvidia is positive it wont. No use in delaying it.
It should still be on Blue's News' main page.Quote:

"Right now all we can say is holidays of this year, which to me feels really unfortunate. Our customers really want to know. They say, "Tell us what the date is going to be," and that's what they want to hear. They're fine with what the date is; they just want to know so they can plan accordingly.
"Right now it's for the holidays. I wish we had a clearer date to give people at this time."
Gabe Newell
"The previously announced September 30th release date for Half-Life 2 is being pushed back. We are currently targeting a holiday release, but do not have a specific "in-store" date to share at this time. We will release that information as soon as we have confirmed a new date."
Both of the above quotes I got from Blue's News (not original quotes...but that's where I got them from). These are the only two I found about the release date and I went all the way back until Friday, September 19, 2003. So where is the quote where Gabe Newell "admitted they were completely dishonest about the release date"?
edit - I also found another dated July 29, 2003. But all that said was Half-Life 2 was going to be delayed. Just wanted to add it since it also was on Blue's News.
