I doubt Gabe would have 1.5 gigs of HL2 sitting in his E-mail, but who knows. I believe the hacker accessed his computer through Outlook, or whatever program he uses, and took it off his computer using that as a gateway. If that's possible.Quote:

Apparently I'm the only person who feels bad for Valve. This has to have a rather large impact on their profits...
their 6 million dollar deal with ati made more money for them than many games put together...I doubt it'll hurt profits in any way...the game will still sell incredibly well reguardless of the leaks or delays...Quote:

A deal which is now not looking too good. How do they bundle video cards with a game that's not going to be finished for six months? Sure, they can sell the cards with those silly coupons, but ATi's gotta be rather unhappy about this development, not to mention the lost/postponed sales they were hoping to drive up at HL2's release due their association with Valve (and nVidia's much-reported disappointing HL2 performance). I've no doubt the game will sell well regardless, but I find it hard to believe there won't be an impact on profits, especially with the HL2 beta spreading like wildfire now that the release date's been pushed back even further.Quote:

I agree the folks at Valve showed an incredible lack of judgment having their code anywhere near an active Internet connection, but that only makes it their fault that the code was vulnerable, not that it was stolen.
I agree, the people at valve screwed up. But you also have to remember they are under a lot of pressure to get things done and one doesn't always think about a person planting spyware on your computer through your e-mail account to steal files from you, you tend to have a lot of other things to worry about. Speaking of, I should probably get back to studying for my prelim that's in two hours...
sure ati might be unhappy but valve still has that 6 million...which is much more than what other developers will see in their lifetime...I don't feel sorry for valve...all the hype...delaying it 6 days before the intended release date...and now this...it just sickens me...and who won't buy hl2 because of this? it seems stupid to not buy the game because it's been delayed...granted yes I am pissed off but that doesn't mean I'm not going to buy it when it comes out...as far as I'm concerned...I'm still camping out at best buy at 4am and playing half-life single player in april...Quote:

Where has Valve pointed fingers? I think they released information about how the attack happend, but i haven't read where they have said it was someones fault, other then the hackers.
