Okies well I'll be honest I dont oc much other than my video card when running benchmarks. That said I wen't into the bios and tried playing around to see what the ram could handle before buying a 1800+.

I set the memory speed to sync, made it the same fsb as whatever i set as the fsb. My default multiplier is 13x, not unlocked so cant change it. pc2700 ram, 333mhz, figured it would run set at a 166fsb pretty easy. Doesnt, wont even boot, have to restart comp and it resets itself to 100mhz fsb and i can try again. Is this because my multiplier is too high or what? Unlocking it though, say I can even do... 180x12, thats still only 2100mhz..

Ram is crucial pc2700, xp2100+ cpu, asus a7n8x mobo.

I don't know about your cooling, temps, volts, whatever, but you should be able to run 13x166 fairly easily.....

Note: Speed, i just ordered mine a few hours ago.....maybe you'll be the lucky one, who knows?? I DO hope we get the same (good) stepping, tho'....

I have a slk heatsink, delta 80mm fan, as3. Normal temps after hours and hours of gaming is usually in the low/mid 30s. Case is very organized for airflow. CPU voltage is 1.75v. I set my memory timings to aggressive, believe it makes it like 7-2-2 or something. 420w psu thats rock solid.

Don't feel too bad, my Crucial didn't even like 145 fsb. It's pc2100, but I thought it would be able to hit that. Crucial doesn't OC well at all, but it's stable as a rock:)

Sucks, doesn't seem like those 1800 prices are special or anything so I guess I'll pass till i scrounge up some new ram~

Since when is a sub $60 processor not special???:eek: Get a 1700+ then!

DAoC, you may need more voltage to run at 13x166. Don't rule out your RAM just yet...after all, its rated to run at 166!:p

Heh, I noticed this as well.. I put an 1800+ in the machine for my mom, and I was amazed to find that it was stable, cold (32C avg.) and clocked at 2.1 ghz! I was pretty impressed for it all being stock. :)

the xp1800 DLT3c are good for stock or crap cooling solutions or for those afraid or unable to pump high voltages. my xp2000 does 2.47GHz, although she needs 2.2v for that. I only run her at that for 3dmark and benchmarks. The benefit of those are you can run modest overclocks at low voltages 24/7 and without tons of heat. If I got one of those, It may be a downgrade but ill be able to use lower voltages and lower temps

What are you talking about? Those would piss all over your Thoroughbred or my Barton. Overclock wise. 2.6GHz @ 1.95V. I'm tempted to ditch the Barton.

Except for the part where you can also run high clocks stable at lower voltages too...:) I don't see how it is a "downgrade" at all???:confused::confused::confused: How are these only good for:

That's what I'm at least trying - to see if it outdoes my Barton.

Alas, I know it may be a 'downgrade', but I'm willing to chance it. Yep, 2.6. What a bummer......
