Computer Maniac, what quality settings were you using?
how do i view my fps while playing doom 3? right now i am running the game at 1024x768 oh high detail and for the most part, it runs okay. i might need to play with the settings some more and see which works best.
A lot of people, including myself, are finding that 1024*768, Medium Details, 2X AA is the "sweet spot" in terms of a compromise between image quality and performance (it plays very well and looks even better).:)
I have Catalyst 4.9 Beta Drivers installed and in the ATI Control Panel I have a custom OpenGL config set up with the following;
AA = Appl Pref
AF = Appl Pref
Texture Pref: Hi Quality
Mip Map: Quality
V Sync: Default off
TrueForm: Always Off
Force Z Buff: Off
Triple Buff: Off
SmartShader Effect: No Effect
I have an AutoExec.cfg file in my Doom3/Base directory with the following tweaks:
seta image_useCache "1"
seta image_cacheMegs "256" (slight difference between 128 and 256)
seta image_cacheMinK "20480"
seta com_videoRAM "128" (128 MB card so..)
seta com_AllowConsole "1"
seta r_displayrefresh "85"
seta image_anisotropy "1" (Default under High Quality is "8", nice approx 5 FPS gain going to "1")
Tests Run (Best of 3 Timedemo demo1.demo)
800 x 600 w/HT
59.00 FPS
High Quality, VSync Off, AA and AF off
800 x 600 w/o HT
58.80 FPS
High Quality, VSync Off, AA and AF off
1024 x 768 w/HT
46.00 FPS
High Quality, VSync Off, AA and AF off
HT seems to have a minimal to no impact on my system with the game running, i'll leave it on as I like HT overall. Vsync on and off with triple buffering enabled had a minmal if any affect. reducing Anistropy form "8" to "1" seemed to yield good results with minimal graphical impact.
Well, 2xAA, 2xAFQuote:

ok, I'll run it, what other settings should I have? like shadow no shadow etc
Some of my results with my xp2100, gf4 4600, 512 ram ...
medium video quality, all details on, no aa/af
800 = 29.4fps
1024 = 21.2fps
1280 = 13.8fps
medium video quality, all details on except shadows, no aa/af
800 = 40.6fps
1024 = 32.4fps <- sweet spot
1280 = 22.4fps
Video quality:
Medium and low both gave roughly the same performance. High quality is unplayable in any res. Oddly enough, I really can't see any difference between these things ... medium works for me. Is there supposed to be a difference, or is this some auto-detect setting or something ..?
Shadows:
Big performance impact (as seen above). I would like to have them on, but 1024 looks much nicer than 800, especially on my 21". :o
Specular:
Small performance impact. It looks nicer on, with little performance hit.
Bumpmapping:
Big performance impact, but it looks real plain and boring without it. You have to leave it on! :)
Overall, I guess I'm happy. I was hoping to play in 1280x1024 like I do in other games, but that just isn't doable anymore. 1024 it is. I could be happier, but I would need to spend a lot of money for that. I'll just wait until current high end hardware is budget, then I'll pounce.
I wonder what you're doing different...techically we've the same systems but you're running about 14 FPS higher than me at the same settings/drivers:(Quote:

Lol. No shadows, specular on, high quality effects on, bump mapping on, stereo sound, no AA&AF, vsync off, low detail.Quote:

You might get similar framerates at higher resolutions like me. (there's hardly any difference between my 800 and 1024's framerates)
PS. Remember to run it twice and discard the first result.
Ok, at those settings (shadow on though) 9fps :)
Whoopeedoo!
Then jsut for fun I turned everytthing off and 26.5fps :eek:
And it doesn't look 1/2 bad!
Shame though, the game is really meant to be played with Shadows on... it looks simply jaw-dropping.
On my system below, I ran some tests...
The only tweaks I did were:
ENABLE triple-buffering in the ATI control panel thing (this made a HUGE increase for me)
VSYNC is off (in Doom3 menu)
and
seta image_useCache "1"
seta image_cacheMegs "128"
seta image_cacheMinK "20480"
(numbers were taken from 2nd test since the first is always slower)
800x600, high quality, no AA, 8xAF = 45fps
800x600, high quality, 2xAA, 8xAF = 39fps
1024x768, high quality, no AA, 8xAF = 39fps
I didn't even bother with AA @ 1024x768 cuz it already looked so good! I am simply amazed at the programming of the id team... this game is JAW-DROPPING...
I play this game as dark as possible, so I am CONSTANTLY switching between my flashlight and weapon... oh, and I play in the middle of the night too... that alone sets the mood perfectly for this game!!!
I must say, BEFORE the tests I had triple buffering DISABLED and VSYNC (in the doom3 menu) ON and my fps @ 800x600, high quality, no AA, 8xAF were 23fps...
So you can see I gained significant frames from doing those two simple tweaks... VSYNC seems to really lower my FPS for some reason, so I just leave it disabled...
Currently I am playing 800x600, high quality, no AA, 8xAF, since it's my computer's 'sweet spot'. The gameplay is incredible smooth and I'll take that ANYDAY over a higher resolution.
Damn... all this talk about D3 now and I must go play!!! :D
Hey, that's pretty nice! What rez where you gettting 26.5FPS?Quote:

640 :p
But seems like resolution don't change fps much... so I am counting on 15~20 at 1024 :)
Cool! Soup strikes again.;)
