It's unbelievable to think that people would do that but I watched it happen. One of my friends had 3 level 50's (before the level cap changed) before I even reach level 40 with my Cleric. He sold his first character, an ogre Warrior which was the first Ogre Warrior to 50 on his server for around $2400 US which was over 3000 Canadian at the time. He had also sold many other items that he camped (farmed) and made lots of money off those items.
It's pretty pathetic that people can get that addicted to games but it does happen. The other friend who I said quit his job to play and waisted 6 months of his life ended up passing away last week in his mid 20's. He never died from gaming, he died from cancer but in the last year of his life we had some chats about the time waisted gaming. Lifes to short to spend day after day playing any game. I don't think I'll ever play another MMORPG again, there to time consuming.
Ouch...kill joy. I am very sorry for your loss though. The main reason I gave up MMORPG's is because I could no longer see the people in RL that I played with online. Playing a game with someone you will never meet for 100 of hours seems like a waste. However, playing a game for 100 hours with somebody you see at least once a month seems like a good deal. Friends doing something together and then spending time together. To me that is what a MMORPG should be...but it seems it doesn't =/
