Quake 4 Preview in PC Gamer

I'll start being concerned/excited about it when it his the shelves. For now, UT2004 still blows away the pack and gives me lots of great gaming. For that matter, so does UT1999. :cool:

I like Q3A fine, but UT2004 does have more gameplay modes and I do like the bonus packs they keep releasing for it. Great games like UT and Q3A just keep on giving, either via mods or packs or whatever. I happen to like the bots in UT and I like playing Instant Action mode. Hope Quake 4 has something like that going for it when it is released. Good AI Bots make a game fun to practice your skills with until you have a chance to get online, if you are so inclined.

I see why they would want to limit to 8 peeps playinig on a D3 engine like that. But quake 4 won't "make it" if they do that.

People are used to having at least 12 people playing at a time on one level. I don't play ut2k4 unless DM has at least 12 in it. I won't play Quake 3 unless it has 12 people in it either....which means its getting harder to find a server :(

If Reznor does the soundtrack for the game again, it'd make up for alot :D.

all SERIOUS gameplay is done 4v4

am I the only fan of smaller player games? I never play ut2k4 dm with more than 10 players and onslaught and assault I try to limit to 16 or 18...

I tried playing it online a couple of months ago through gamespy. I could only find 2 or 3 servers.

I'm not sure where everyone is hearing these limitations to the multiplayer but from what I gathered from the article they were definitely working around it and boosting the amount of players etc while not killing your machine and network.

Besides... what is wrong with 8v8? Those are perfect sized servers and games.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Enemy Territory are the funnest games with 32+ players. Just had to share that.

I think Co-Op with like 16 players can be a hoot. For deathmatch, I guess I'd prefer to stick to 8 or less, but whoever is in charge of hosting the game usually picks how many they allow to join, so...

I think by the time that Quake 4 gets released they probably would have used some of the source code from Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil which apparently will boost Doom 3's maximum player count, and Raven has modded id engines before, they will do a great job of modding Quake 4. Its early but they will deliver a good game....I just wish Activision would give Raven a chance to make a new Heretic/Hexen game off of the Doom 3....oh man.

One point that might have been missed early on too: Doom3 and Quake4 are both id games. What would you expect them to use? License another engine? Spend another 4 years developing a new one just for Q4?
