I'm in the LOTR beta and I purchased Vanguard. IMO, LOTR graphics are much better. They are more immersive, colorful.....of course graphics are subjective too. But that's my opinion. (I'm running WS at high detail in both games). Both run fairly well though my rig may not be typical (see sig). Biggest difference I see at this point is that Vanguard is more challenging......you level slower and there is a real death penalty at level 7. Mobs help each other and it's easy to get in over your head in Vanguard. In LOTR you get faster leveling, mobs are less willing to help and there is very little in the way of a death penalty. Which is better? I like both though Vanguard is more challenging.

WoW uses a variation on the same UI everyone has been using for a while now. It predates WoW and all that really changes from game to game is the shape of the various UI elements.

I'm thinking about preordering this (mainly because my brother wants to play this with me, he has never played an MMO before.)

If I preorder now I get access to the game on March 30th and get to keep my character after the game officially launches. I also get 9.99 a month instead of 14.99 and a few ingame items. I need a casual MMO so I can finally get away from wow.

Can anyone outline the classes that are in the game and give their impression of each? Thanks!

I don't know if you saw it, but you can get a lifetime membership for $199 which is not a bad deal if you plan on playing the game for awhile.

If you play it for much more than a year its worth it. I dont think I could stick with an mmo that long.

Maybe I am missing something here but the lifetime membership seems like a huge gamble. Consider this, if you were part of beta, you get to pay $10/month (instead of $15/month) for as long as you maintain your subscription. Under this arrangement, you would have to play for 20 months before you saved any money with the lifetime pass. I don't know about you but that is a huge assumption that you will still be interested in 20 months. Even paying $15/month, you would have to play for over a year before you saw any savings...Plus, you would have to first buy the game, which is like $50 - so you are looking at an outlay of $250 to play an MMO which isn't done yet. I can't understand how anyone could justify this?

I really enjoy this game, its a nice departure from wow.

If you liked LoTR books, this game has a TON of lore in it, and i've yet to find a mistake lore wise.

It's an individual choice. It might not make sense to you, but for someone that was going to make this their MMORPG and maybe have their guild join up, it may be worth it. For example, the guild I joined WoW with pretty much knew we where going to stay while in Beta and we are still playing over 2 years later. Even my first MMORPG, DAoC is still going some 5 years later and I'm sure I played at least 2 years on it and would still play today if I had a lifetime membership.

Even the worst MMORPG games last 3 years. I remember people saying that about SWG and even WoW.

That's probably a pretty good part of it. You have a better chance of sticking with the game if you've already dropped $250 into it than if you are just paying month to month. I just up and decided to quite City of Heroes one day, but if I had already paid off two years of it, I would definitely have kept on playing.

The lifetime membership is something of a self fulfilling prophecy.

It just doesnt rub me the right way to pay 250 dollars for a MMO. I will go with the 9.99.

If you preorder you also get into openbeta a month before launch and keep your character. So you pretty much get a huge head start over everyone.

Anyone have a link to a site that explains the classes?

Just to clarify, it's a week prior to open-beta launch that you can get in. If you pre-order it's March 30th, otherwise it's April 6th. Also, the $9.99 is the price as long as you don't cancel. Once you do, it goes back up to $14.99 like everyone else.

Yeah, I know. The game launches the 24th of april, so preorder people get in about a month early. They also keep their characters like I said, but others that are in beta but didnt preorder do not.

I hope it turns out good :)

I played it, its even easier than WoW. Not my thing but it does have really nice graphics and performance.
