Okay, just got back.
So, the 1tb passed the Western Digital Extended test, which includes SMART.
Green checkmarks across the board.
I'll look into the enclosure. But, once I verify that it might be the controller, then what? Is a new motherboard the only solution?
The only drive that loses detection is the 1tb which I just use for storage. My main drive with my OS does not cut out.
Maybe if i get the enclosure, i'll be able to squeak by by just connecting the storage drive externally?
edit:
I contacted tech support, waiting to hear back from them. In the meantime, I installed an update SATA controller driver; some JMicron thing. Is there anything else I should try to do? I think I will swing by Best Buy later this week to check out external enclosures as well.
What a pain in the *** this is. At first I thought I only had half a dozen files that were corrupted, and I quickly replaced them from backups. I thought there were only half a dozen from checking wininit logs in event viewer (which reproduces the results from chkdsk on startup). But when I went to play this one mp3, it said it was missing (which has only happened when the hard disk experiences detection loss). Ugh. I should probably start making image backups through Norton Ghost or something, anyone have recommendations for a (freeware) solution?
