from what i've heard bot companies have nice buisness features. Although i am kinda going for Intel at this caes. The Northwood systems, and the RDRAM really makes a difference for business apps, and stuff like that. I think of AMD as more of a gaming system company.

Now seriously. Considering 90% of business use consists of wordprocessing, spreadsheet applications, i cant see that a P4 with RDRAM is required. A nice P3 with 128mBytes is still much more than adequate for that kind of business use. Anyone who tries to convince there IT department they need a P4 to get thier MS Office running smoothly is a total tosser.Quote:

Admittedly servers are a different matter, but then i dont believe "most" business users would actually use their personal machine as a server.

In my case: Intel, simply because of volume. With over 500 users, it's not feasible for us to build PCs. We buy them from Dell. We need them to all be alike and we need to process them with our standard image.

Just like IT slave said they want them all alike, they also want tried and true. When you have to maintain hundreds of PC,s you do not want to have to search for drivers every time you work on a PC you just want to throw in a copy of windows for all your needs. Since Intel CPU,s and chipsets do not need any reg fixes or patches they are the choice CPU's and chipsets for business.

It depends on your situation. I wouldn't custom build them unless you want to be the tech support all the time if something goes wrong. It's well known that it's very easy to build them these days but if there is an issue that turns up later on do you want to be the guy they point the finger to?Quote:

Buying from a recognized mfg like Dell gets you excellent support for parts IMHO. If anything goes bad they will 24hour you a new part with minimal questions.
Prices are competitive and the systems work relatively well. Hell I can run just about anything on my Dell at work. I don't have experience with Gateways or Compaqs but I've been impressed with Dells Laptops and Desktops and have used them extensively over the years.
While AMD's are indeed better performers that won't get you much in most business applications unless your running large spreadsheets or other 3D apps. I'd lean towards Intel personally. If you've ever had a heatsink work loose or fall off an Intel processor will survive - many AMD's not likely.

I think if your business is a family business and at most 2-3 comps.. you could build it yourself but if its 5 or more.. its safer and more convenient to go with Dell or someone else. The new AMD's are much better in Content Creation benchmarks than Intels; this has been shown again and again. I work for a medium sized software company in Toronto and every machine in the office has dual Athlon processors. The IT guys love these better than any Intel's they've ever had in the past.Quote:

Developing in .NET architecture, with Windows XP, 512 megs of Ram? We tried using P4's....we'd get constant hangups and crashes, especially with pipelining and multi-threading issues. The Athlon's run Visual Studio .NET without a hitch.

Although Athlon's are great and stable, a cooler running P3 on an Intel chipset is what stability is all about.
In business, you have to be so careful because running into computer problems will just be more headaches which is exactly what you don't want. I don't recommend AMD systems unless you find a company that will sell you business class systems with warranties and on-site support for a good price using AMD processors. Otherwise, everyone else in here is right. AMD is faster and cheaper.
Honestly, do you think a bunch of people in cubicles need P4 Northwoods with RDRAM? That would jack up prices inherently.. so that Microsoft Word can load like 3 seconds faster?Quote:

P4's are also, only good for gaming machines, CAD, and Media Editing. And honestly Athlons own in CAD and gaming and for sure Media Editing so there's not really a reason to get a P4.
I think you all are missing the point entirely. He is asking for what needs the least support so obviously he is gonna try for prebuilts. My school system went dell for the last 2 years but now they are gonna get 20 some students to volunteer this summer and design a comp and create an image for it then mass produce it. It ends up more expensive this way for a business so it makes more sense to go from dell.
The only pre bult companies making amd systems are compaq and HP and they have worse tech support than dell.

And Jordan broke the first book into 2 books (which makes sense since its the 2nd longest in the series). It is my personal theory that some1 is gonna make a movie of them to combat the Lord of the rings movies.

1.) Go into the CPU forum and ask why P4's are so much better than Athalons?
2.) Go into the Video card forums and ask which is better, a geforce3 ti500 or a radeon 8500?
3.) Go into the Video Cards Forum and call 3dmark stupid and pointless.
4.) Go into the General Hardware forum and ask what the best possible system is if money isn't an issue.
Take a serious look at the Hewlett Packard Vectra line. They are custom created for business use. Excellent machines, we have them at work (hundreds of 'em) they never break and the systems people love them. They can be had with Pentium 4's or Celeron processors. You can buy them cheap through outlets if you can live with last years speeds. They come with Windows 2000 Professional op systems.
