To the guys who said 2k boots twice as fast as 98----i cant speak for the guy that agreed with me, but my win98 install is clean. i dont load anything except games in it, no extra bootup stuff and the like.

It all depends on what you do. Business apps = W2K. Games = WinME, yes thats right it comes with DX7.1 out of the box. Also boots a hell of a lot faster but you lose stability and possible fault tolerance.

I'm with you in some ways on this. As on OS everything seems to work faster. In terms of games though we've run benchmarks and they're slower in Win2K (Quake 3 etc...) BUt not so slow that it hurts...

bhirsch is right whistler is a *NEW* OS, it is not winME. (They havent even finished getting the first alpha test of whistler out the door yet..)

Win ME is NOT and never was Whistler, Whistler will likely be Windows 2001.
They've been working on ME since well before January when Whistler started up - first beta rumored for Oct.11.

Whistler (not WinME) will be based off of the Windows 2000 code base (thus based off of the windows NT5 or win2k kernel). It will not use the exact same files, but it wil be based on them.

Windows me is the last operating system coming from Redmond using the DOS shell. The next Shell will be NT, and I highly suppose Win 2003 will be a whole new Kernel. Whistler will have some components of the .NET archetecture, but not many, and hopefully wont have all the 9x and ME crap in it.
a lot will depend on your hardware. sharky does a lot of dual testing and the results show a mixed results. 2K has to be more stable than 95/98 but there will be the enivitable teething problems too. i still use 95. most of ME can be downloaded for free so ill wait until the SE 2k arrives.

Umm, no. WinME is WinMe - Whistler is the next in line. A friend of mine at Dell has received a number of "preview" alpha builds of Whisler, one fairly recently. They were not WinMe betas but something totally different. The help file was the Win2k help file though, it was funny. He told me he succesfully got it to install and run on a laptop with only 64 megs of RAM even, though it ran like a dog.
But, bottom line - Windows Millenium Edition and Whisler are totally separate OSs.
