yeah i would most definitely go with AMD anyway, regardless of how much the Pentium 4 is overpriced, but by how overpriced the Pentium III is for such week FPU (which is really what I need https://www.sharkyforums.com/images/.../2005/08/2.gif). What makes me a little mad is that the only DDR DIMM I would buy is Mushkin's 128MB PC2100 2.5-2-2 DIMM, for $164. I'll get two or three of those later this month. The problem is, the cheapest PC800 128MB DIMM also costs $165! DDR [the good DDR266] is priced just like RAMBUS right now... a little strange? How fast do you think prices will fall here? I'm getting a TBird 1GHz, and an Abit KT7A-RAID pretty soon, so I would like some opinions. Also, how far could I OC a 1GHz TBird on a KT133A. I will have the Taisol Forged 6063 Heatsink, with a 30CFM Delta cooler on it (as opposed to the 21CFM it regularly comes with). Any comments?

I think the DDR athlons are a waste why spend so much for so little performance.
Hey Arcadian nice posts as always I have some questions do u know when or if the p3/p4s are going to get 512k FS L2 cache or a higher L1? Also I am planing on upgrading to the new p3's on .13 micron or a p4 Do u think the p3 on .13 micron will be worth it?
Right now im running dual p3 600s @ 840mhz = 1.68Ghz and this system ownz the 1.2ghz athlon p3 1ghz and the p4s in most dual cpu optimized games/programs do u think dual p4's would have a big atvantage over my system? If so do u think it would be worth the 2000$ or so to ger a dual p4 system BTW I mainly do web design using 3d studio and photo 6.0 front page and quake 3 and thats it all else is done on my other system.

Sorry If i didnt make the previous post clearer. I am going to buy a TBird 1GHz and I have 256MB of Crucial PC133 2-2-2. I am going to run that on an Abit KT7A-RAID. Once Palomino is out, I will pass that down to my mom, and get 256MB of DDR to run the Palomino on, which will be some Abit AMD760 mobo. The Palomino will see a greater benefit with DDR than SDR.Quote:

ya thats sounds better alot of people at this bord with 1Ghz or higher birds wanna sell them for DDR birds with ddr ram and thats like very dumb to do becuse the ddr wont be that much better to evan make it worth while.It maybe worth while if the ddr birds go higher like 1.3-1.5Ghz but like the p3 the k7 core has its limits.

The rumor concerning Tualatin (.13u Pentium III) is that it would have 512KB of L2 cache. I believe that this version of Tualatin has moved to the mobile place for two reasons. First, Intel wants Pentium 4 to rule the desktop very soon, and newer, faster Pentium III Processors would likely steal the spotlight, and second, Intel does not plan on a Pentium 4 mobile CPU any time soon. I think that the Tualatin core will be very similar to the Coppermine core (on the desktop only... see above). Therefore, if you are satisfied with current Pentium III performance, than you can expect similar performance and higher clock speeds with the .13u Pentium III Tualatin.

Good for you. Dual CPUs are a good choice in some applications, but I'm sure you'll realize that calling your core frequency the sum of the frequencies of both processors in a misnomer. I've found that dual processors should give you up to 60% more performance than one processor with highly parellelized programs, but in the more normal case, you get about a 20% boost. If there were dual Pentium 4 solutions, then that may be something to consider. However, the current Pentium 4 core (Willamette) does not support multiprocessing. Foster, which is due to arrive in April or May, will support it, I believe.
The great thing about Foster, though, is that if rumors are true, than it has some kind of multithreading ability built into the core. This means that you can get dual processor performance out of a single processor. I would definately recommend researching this, as it may be great for your needs.

Like I said, wait for Foster to be released. If Foster does turn out to have multithreading capabilities, then you can easily put together a $2000 workstation with twice the performance of your current Pentium III dual processor system.
I believe that Foster will be introduced at prices similar to where the Pentium 4 is right now, which for 1.5GHz means about $750. Keep in mind that one Foster may be the equivalent of TWO Pentium 4 processors using your dual processing enabled programs. With all the new processors you have listed coming to market in the near future, is there a planned chipset that will proved some path of upgrading for many generations of processors as this writer's BX chipset has? It appears the AMD's 760 may have this capablity, how about Intel?

Intel? Are you nuts? They try to make every CPU have its OWN chipset, so when you choose to upgrade, you have to get a new motherboard, therefore, paying them for not only the CPU, but the platform on which to run them!

I disagree, I am running a 2 1/2 year old Abit BX6 R2 at a nice speed as you can see below. This MB has also had a p2 233 and cel. 400, all of which have OC'ed.
What chipset DID AMD or supporting firms have that survived this long?
If you read the post I am NOT flaming AMD, in fact they appear to have a chipset that may provide a upgrade path better than Intel, THATS THE QUESTION posed.
