Look, if I can have a system that performs equal to an i850, for roughly 2/3's of the cost... Then what the hell is wrong with that?

Did God say that I must buy rambus with my P4 or I am sinning?

Right now the ECS K7S5A (SIS 735)performs very well for Athlons, it also costs around HALF as much as another decently performing Athlon board.

This trend will probably continue with the 645 since they are cheaper to produce, and are designed for value - yet provide performance to that of something that costs twice as much (MOTHERBOARD AND RAM).

Don't compare 128 megs of ram, I am not looking to buy a 128 stick. Because if I wanted 256, I'd have to buy 2 of them, and use up extra slots while I am at it.

256 megs of DDR ~30, RDRAM ~65
2x256 DDR ~60, RDRAM $130
SIS 645 Motherboard ~80
Asus TH7II or good i850 ~140-180

Now I can save roughly $160 and put it towards a better monitor, better souncard, speakers, video card, the things that actually matter.

Also the i845 is out, and it sucks monkey balls with SDRAM. I guess we will see how it performs with DDR..

Just because I like their chip doesn't mean I like them. I'd rather get a cheaper P4 and overclock it up on a SIS645 board with DDR.

Keeping money with the competition is the only way to keep all companies progressing forward.

Now we just have to wait for VIA's P4X266A or P4X333.

One thing I noticed was that I am not able to buy a DDR SDRAM mobo for the P4 and I am not able to buy a DDR333 memory stick for any mobo, so being excited about the DDR board beating the RDRAM board is premature in this case. If we used future technologies from Rambus they would mop the floor with the DDR SDRAM mobos.

Don't be so excited about a technology that is hardly even here, be more excited about a technology that is DEFENITELY not here.

On the tom's hardware test, it only barely pulls a win in a couple of benchmarks, but it does keep up very well overall.

That's correct. Also, the number of physical channels and banks has an effect on latencies. In fact, it's possible that if trace lengths are long enough, or if there's enough loaded (filled) banks, PC800 might have higher latencies then PC600 on simpler (lower bank count etc.) platforms. This is because of artificial delays introduced to compensate for different delays. Of course, PC800s raw-bandwidth would generally more then make up for the latnecy difference.

Because of the way the DRDRAM memory controller accesses the mapped memory, the memory controller must introduce delays so that all modules have the same latency. I'm not quite sure about this, but I believe the RDRAM controller doesn't use a conventional strobe on a conventional demultiplexer (decoder) like SDRAM controllers. That point is really not important in answering your question, however.

More specifically, since slower speed RDRAM runs on a slower dedicated clock, any signal latencies (propogation delays, etc.) would be amplified and would have to be accordingly compensated for. The exact algorithim for this I'm not sure of, but it is part of Rambus' tight reference specifications for the DRDRAM platform I'm sure.

that has got to be one of the worst posts i have ever seen. who cares you cannot buy it? that is the point of the review, to test stuff that isn't out yet. duh!! see how much hoopla there was over the nForce, people were talking as if it was the second coming. too bad it kinda dissapointed though, anyways, my point is you get excited over things that are not available yet, not things you can readily get.

My post was in reply to the first poster. I was just reminding him that the mobo that they tested wont be released to the public for awhile. If we want to compare future technologies, then I'm sure Rambus would be able to provide technology that would destroy DDR SDRAM in the benchmarks. PC1200 at 64 bits anyone? But they didn't ask Rambus if they wanted to provide silicon. This review is just marketing hype.

BTW, did you see the review of PC96000 vs cold fusion vs magical rocket shoes at Annandtech? I can't wait! (Sarcasm)

The chipset is complete. It is in the hands of board manufacturers now, and the expected release date is supposed to be the next 30-45 days...not that long.

The PC2700 spec has already been ratified by JEDEC, and both Kingmax and Corsair having working modules...that's what they used in the review.

OK, I give up. I was just saying that you can't buy the boards now. Just like you can't buy PC1066 boards at 32 bits although the boards do exist and are being worked on. I mean, the first DDR boards were like 8 months late an they are just starting to get good benchmarks with the DDR boards.

Also, can you buy PC2700 right now? Just curious. How much does it cost?
