adsl - dsl - sdsl - cable????

I have @HOME in Connecticut for $40/month. They gave me a static IP and I was running a half-life game server for the past year. I was getting 500KB/s download - 400KB/s upload, thats about a 4Mb download, not too shabby for $40/month.
Then in September they capped the upload rate on my cable to 128kb/s, so I only get about 15KB/s upload now. I can't run my server any more, but I still love my cable, much faster than my friends ADSL, that they pay the same price for.
I just picked up the SMC7008BR 8 port 10/100 router/switch for about $160. It works like a champ,

Our cable services here (we have 2) aren't very good. No servers are allowed (ports are blocked) and no static ip addresses. They offer that capability only at business prices of $150/mo and up. At least I get 3 static ip and DNS support for my $90/mo. I have my own domain w/web, mail and ftp servers going. It's great for my far flung family.

I have comcast@home and it's slowed down a little bit over the past year but still very fast. I live in the Philly, PA area so i don't know how many people actually have the service near me but I used to get downloads between 300 and 400 kb\s. Lately it's dropped to around 200 to 250 kb\s. Which is still like 1.5 to 2.0 MB\s. My buddy has DSL and he only gets like 80 to 100 kb\s and he has to click the little icon every time his computer starts. I know its not much to ask for but i am an admin. I don't like doing any more work than I have to. Its all about the solitare time right guys. Well that's my two scents about DSL and cable. Later.

Not all DSL ISP's are going with PPPoE. Some of them actually care about their customers. I have Telocity, and it uses ATM (instead of PPPoE so it's always on), self-install, static IP's, and they publicly state that they don't care if you run a server. 1536/256 for $50 a month. It's also far better than the cable service here. (Try fighting with a bunch of college students for cable bandwidth when you get home and see what kind of mood it puts you in)

Sometimes we just have to take what we can get. I've noticed around my neck of the woods, you get cable...you're screwed, you get DSL...you're equally screwed. Seems like too many people using both services and hogging up the bandwidth. I'm just glad that that I don't have to dial-up at 56K anymore.

With most DSL providers, you do not share bandwidth. The circuit between you and the DSLAM is a private for your use only circuit. If you are on a frame relay circuit between the DSLAM and your ISP, there is a minimum bandwidth defined called a CIR - committed information rate. When congestion occurs your packets cannot be dropped if it puts your thruput below the CIR. You can buy CIR at rates <= to your frame relay speed, i.e., 768 circuit speed with 768 CIR or 1.544 circuit speed with a 768 CIR, to save $$$.
