Foruntately I have been lucky myself. I got a Co-Op position through the summer. I work help desk stuff and do misc. things, but I'm begging my boss for some programming assignments. I don't want my programming experience to go stale and get left behind in the market. Good luck with everyone out there. It's a tough market. I think I've been able to get this job because I think I'm tax-ductible although I'm not sure about that. That certainly doesn't mean that there's no chance of me to lose the job however as companies rarely look beyond short-sited goals. After all, all companies say they try and go for long term goals, but how many put their money where their mouth is? :rolleyes:

Companies have always had the same goal--make money, period. There is no such thing as loyalty in the workplace anymore, if there was any in the first place. I was at my job for 3+ years before getting laid off in Nov. Some had been there for over 14, and have families.

By laying off so many people, companies across the country effectively took that much more money out of the economy, which sinks EVERYONE deeper into the recession. As employees and potential employees, we need to do wake up and do as the companies do: look out for number one!

Well, I must say, I was where you are. I got laid off in August, but fortunately found new work in October. I do database work, so fewer people are competing for the same job. Still, persistance is the key. Good luck.

I have been out of consistent work for longer than you have, Galen... Any responses recently?

I got an automated response a couple weeks ago, and I was buzzed... sad, isn't it.

Over the last 6 months I have done a bit of light contracting work, and my unemployment is all gone... I don't know what to try, since employers and even headhunters don't respond anymore.

My skills are top-notch, my professional biography is in the Who's Who of Information Technology, I have a great deal of experience (over 5 years), and I do not even get responses.

I guess I could have it worse -- I have a friend with over 25 years of experience, a Master's degree, and a really serious skillset, and he is getting no response as well...

I just hope that Bob comes through -- he can normally find work in the strangest of places, and he has been successful in getting me into an excellent job twice in a row. If IBM were hiring, I would already work for them...

Of course, much of my free time is spent on my top-secret project, which, if successful, should fix the problem for all of my highly skilled friends that are out of work. :)

I have been there, and getting laid off is never good, especially since it seldom comes at a good economic time.

If your company is letting go or more than 50% of their employees and has more than 100 they have to give six months notice, or else pay you for tht six months.

I was told that I should physically appear at Southwest Airlines (lookin' for techies over there) and that would give me a better chance than just faxing my resume to them. I'm planning on doing that today.

Welp, I went and talked to a head hunter today. Not even an automated response from anyone else. Woo-hoo.

I dunno, at least its better than it was 5 months ago right? Right?
