How come no one mentioned Tetris. This must be the most influential game ever, with clones numbering in thousands (what other game can claim that?). However no clone could beat the simplicity and fun-ness of the original !

My votes:
Command and Conquer (the orignal)
Myst
SimCity (the original)
well true it is a game with many many many clones... which nothing else can touch.. but what sucks is the orignal russian dude who wrote it couldnt copyright it so he made like nothing.Quote:

Maguss (IMHO) was the best char in Chrono Trigger
The game that is the foundation for most of the games we play today... DUNGEON. That is the orignal game that zork was modded to be named.

You guys name a lot of good games, but not many ground breaking games.
C&C - first came war craft
War Craft - first came Dune II (made by same company as C&C)
DOOM - Come on. This game was nothing original. There were too many games that it learned from to list. It was DARN good, but not ground breaking.
System Shock/2/Deus Ex - Ditto
Half-Life - What this game did that was ground breaking was post release. They did not just release their source code; they totally supported the heck out of the mod community. We all know where that went. The original game WAS EXCELLENT, but again, not ground breaking in any way. It just did tons of stuff right (Wish Valve would put out just ONE product that’s actually new though.)
Rainbow Six - Seal Team (I think that’s the correct name?) from EA. If you can remember this game you are old school hard core. If the people from EA did not play Seal Team I would be amazed. The similarities between the two are LARGE. If you don't know anything about it, it’s about the Seals Team in Vietnam. It's pretty awesome; Operation Flashpoint would probably be a more comparable product though.
Anything you play on your TV. - Give me a BREAK. Rpg’s is about all they HAD. If they are right THIS time about the death of the computer game, then I am done with games... Consoles do have their place though.... in a 15 year olds rec room. (I try not to flame, but I honestly hate consoles. sorry to anyone I have offended).
Deciding if something is ground breaking is totally a perspective and opinion thing though. But that’s my 2 cents (American).
(Of course gotta give props to the true originals such as Zork, Wizardry, pong, asteroids, their predecessors and many others…)

Bungie really deserves more than just credit for Myth, they created a FPS with a story!...
while most people were happy running around killing hordes of monsters from hell, Bungie brought something new the table with Marathon.... plot!
I think it should be recognized for the excellent, ground-breaking game it was...even though probably no one here played it because it only came out on mac.
What about the Final Fantasy series? Did anyone mention them yet?

While I tend to agree with you. I think they are trying to reach a much broader audience these days.Quote:

but really FFIII or Chrono Trigger and just about anything squaresoft before the PSX.. imho squaresoft hasnt made a great game in years..FFVII/VIII/IX sucked.. FFt, Xenogears and Chrono Cross (borrowed a lot from Trigger) were nice... but not great. I think FFX will also suck.. squaresoft is taking too much time in caring what it looks like and has forgot about the important part the storyline.

Myth was a First-Person shooter? That's new to me.Quote:

I believe he was talking about Marathon (FPS). Myth was not an FPS. I never played it b/c it is on Mac, but heard good things. I am still pissed about Bungie selling out...

You are all fools! (jj)
Have you not forgotten which game brought WIDESPREAD multi-play, would you not consider that to be a big deal. Teh topic wasnt the best game ever so games like Sys Shock 2 and Deus Ex(Even though DX is my all time Fav.Game) dont work. It was the most IMPORTANT games ever, to be an important game, I think you have to create/heavily-impact a genre, or have such an influence on the evolution of gaming that it is undeniable. That is why I think Quake 1 is THE most important game to date.

hunt the wumpus -> adventure -> zork -> rogue -> kings quest -> Koronis Rift -> wolfenstein -> ultima underworld -> quake 1.
so if quake 1 is your most important, the real root if it is hunt the wumpus! making it FAR more important than quake 1, for without it, no quake 1!!
(hands up who actually remember koronis rift / rescue on fractalus / ballblazer??)
the above evolution goes from adventure to 3d to 3d fps to 3d fps + multiplay (and i do consider some tiny element of adv/rpgism to be still in FPS, even if all FPS are garbage hehehe).

The most important games are:
teris
space invader
pacman
wolf3d
dune2
Kings Quest series
Final Fantasy series
Oh yeah, I forgot this one: Scorched earth.

Street Fighter 2
goodness gracious. i'm ashamed of you people. you mention doom, or wolfenstein, but none of you mention the FIRST to truly effectively utilize a first-person perspective. not only that, perhaps still one of the finest roleplaying games ever...
ultima underworld: the stygian abyss. this game changed my life. honest.
also, civ, warcraftII, duke nukem 3d,space quest I (or kq, leisure suit larry and day of the tentacle) fallout, and finally, system shock II.
Metal Gear/Metal Gear Solid
Snatcher
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Lunar
Kakyuusei
Sakura Taisen
All were revolutionary for their genre, IMO. ^^

I said Deus Ex because it was the first FPS to have RPG elements. It may not be a old game but it is VERY important IMO.Quote:

I was an ace at Fort Apocolypse. (Had trouble in Intermediate mode though)
I pretend I didn't hear you say golden eye.
I think everyone just about covered the shooters and such. But what about some of the old school Apogee stuff, Keen, Duke 1, etc. And anyone who has ever played and adventure game owes a great debt to Lucas arts, they gave us great games like monkey island and grim fandango.

Well you have all listed some great games. But, I see one absence that I feel needs to be corrected.
In the line of On Line RPGs...
The DIKU MUDs...
Evercrack, Ashrons Call, and all of the other current on line games in that category borrowed heavily from the DIKU.
