Internal tempreture diode, to which one or two of the pins on the CPU will be assigned. Currently Athlon XP/MP/4 processors also have internal tempreture diodes, although it'll only give a reading if the mainboard supports this.

barton is going to be amd's first processor to use SOI, which will allow them to ramp the clock speeds even higher, but it'll still be socket A

It is Silicon on Insulator (or insulation, I can't remember). There should be an article on Anandtech or Toms Hardware Guide on it.

Whoa. After checking out that anandtech article, i am starting to drool over hammer. THere are a couple problems though. First, a IHS. This is good in some ways like reducing temp and preventing the core from being crushed, it means basically an end to unlocked multipliers. Another problem is that claw and sledge hammer have different pin counts and won't work on the same mobo. This really won't be too much of a problem at all since they serve different markets but since amd have been using socket a for all chips from value to server currently, it is a change. With SOI, it reduces the amount of leakage of current and requires less current to switch on and off (correct me if i am wrong, this is from memory). Basically, it makes stuff run faster, that is all you need to know. I remember somebody saying that to use SOI you needed a different socket though so i am not sure about socket a. Again, this is not for sure i just think i remember somebody saying this.

all i know is that amd is preparing to blow intel out of the water. they finally have a processor that thas the capacity to run cool, and be clocked fairly high. i think they will make larger jumps in clock speed as well. not just 66mhz increments for the xp

I may be way wrong but and I'm not sure if this has been addressed but I read somewhere that the socket 563 is for mobile computer, laptops.

I currently have a T-BIRD right now (OCed pretty good) so I think I'll upgrade the CPU when the Barton hits the streets. :-)

I still fail to see either company "blowing the other out of the water" since that roadmap(mid half1 of 2003) pits the hammer against probably 3.5 - 4 ghz NW's with Intel about to switch to its .09 micron process. Sledge will not be going against Itanium but Mckinley(which kicks Itamiums butt from what I've seen and read). It seems to me like clawhammer will most likely put AMD on even footing with Intel again after it loses ground for much of the next few months(I don't feel AMD has anything to keep up with NW until hammer debuts). I also don't think the AMD's switch to a new core will go that much more smoothly than Intel's switch to the P4 although I don't think it will be quite as messy as Intel's switch. These two will continue to be at about the same level for the forseeable future unless hammer turns out to be a dud. Remember, much of what AMD has gained in the past 16 months came during an Intel "transition" period, and when they come out with hammer the roles will reverse with Intel running full speed and AMD going through their transition woes(if they're too far behind Intel at this point, this is something that COULD turn them back into the 2 bit player they were pre athlon). I think AMD will be fine as long as they get hammer out BEFORE the Athlon has reached its architecture limits(They've still got some tech in there that may limit the gains made by upping the clock speed). But either way, barring a HUGE blunder on AMD's part nobody is blowing anybody out of the water.
