go to a bookstore/library and read the first 3-4 pages of the first book (which is The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) and it will instantly take top priority...if you're not hooked after those first few pages...don't bother reading it ;)
and for a recommendation, try to get your hands on The Ultimate Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, it's the all-in-one volume, all 5 books and the short. There's a faux leather bound version (looks like a bible, which it is...in a way ;)) and a cheesy color book cover version...guess which version I like better :)
