Well, if you compare the Geforce2 GTS (DX7 card) to a DX8 card like the Geforce4 there is just as big of a jump as there is between the the R300 (DX9 card) and the Geforce4 (DX8)

dBLISS, it's more significant because it's ATI smashing Nvidia's benchmarks, not Nvidia improving upon their own product.

with the given timeframe, now i expect the NV30 to top the 9700, and ATI will be working to counter the NV30.

But the GF4s were how many *generations* ahead? 2, well actually, more like 3, GF3s, GF3 Ti, then GF4 Ti. The R300 is a full 1 generation ahead of the GF4s. Very good execution by ATi to pull this one off, especially with the not so bad drivers.

Oh I agree fully, i'm glad to see Ati finally take the speed crown from Nvidia, this can only make the Industry more competitve, and competiton is a good thing for consumers.

It's unfair to call it 3, more like 1 and 1/2 if anything. There is very little difference between the Geforce3 and the Geforce3 Ti other then an increase in clockspeed and a rebranding. That's like calling the Geforce2 Ultra a generation ahead of the Geforce2 GTS. The difference between the Geforce3 and Geforce4 cards isn't really a new generation of cards either, there were no new features add to the Geforce4 over the Geforce3. The only differences were the addtion of a 2nd vertex shader, increased clock speed and more memory bandwidth. These changes don't warrent being called a new generation of video cards.

yeah exactly, look how fast 3dfx went from the best to being acquired by nvidia. Missing a product cycle is killer.

dbliss you are right. geforce 2 was not much more than a speed boosted GF. geforce 4 is more a refinement of geforce 3 architecture.

Good thing ATI is here to push Nvidia.

sh**t they said before integrating a MPEG4/DivX video encoder with the new R300 chip based AIW graphics card.:(

moreover the prices range is weird. previously the All in Wonder was allways more expensive than the flagship version.

This card is the future and i doubt that NV30 will be faster , i think and i am 100% sure that cards will be equal , when NV30 will be out the 9700 drivers will be solid and fast and they will do everything to keep cards on par .Look the huge work with the 8500 ,..the thing is a lot older but is on par with TI4200 .
I will buy this card 1 month after release , hopefully the prices will go down a bit then .

well, ah... staying with my Ti-4600 for now :)

This isn't just an amzing card, providing ATI can keep to their roadmap it could turn the tables completely, with ATI being king and releasing faster cards earlier and Nvidia trying to catch up.

It's not a theory, trust me, it's a fact. The R300 do use new dlls within the driver package but the drivers are still unified. I've been hacking ATI drivers for a few months now, so I know. What this basically means is that when setup detects the R300 it will install a few different files. However, they still do seem to share some code (seemingly the control panel).

I´m going to buy one myself, but I´ll wait 2-3 months... that price tag is a bit hefty at the moment..

another reason to wait a bit longer is when ATi goes 0.13

Mostprobably that'll be the next stepping where Ati will add some extra mhz to counter the NV30..

I´m just pretty stoked :eek: about the real time rendering ... talk about cinematics in games, all those sweet renderings will be realtime .. just think about those next gen games...

This is really really good news! When it becomes widely available, the geforce 4 ti series are going to drop in price. I finished building 2 systems, (AMD rig is down at the moment until I get another hd), I still need one more computer in the house so I guess I am going to go with the Geforce 4 ti4200- ti 4600. :D

remainder: only video encoding/editing could use dual processoring. (DivX, AutoCad, 3D Studio, Adobe Premiere ...)

Its being used for a server, thats why its got so much hard drive space and ram.

Same here, I just bought my second ati 8500, but this time, it has 128mb. :(

I had very bad technical service with ati. Technical support is all the way in Canada and I had to wait 20+ minutes for a technician. My first 8500 that I bought from ubid worked my my amd system, but it didn't work in my p4 sytem. So I bought another 8500, but this one has 128mb memory. The second card I bought worked in my p4 sytem. (see sig). Just letting you guys know that if you need technical support from ATI, beware of your phone bills! ;)

I am suprised that there hasn't been more NVIDIA fans peeing on this post. I will shell out my hard earned dough in 30 days for the next best thing, such is the nature of the beast. I know it will be the fastest thing out there, just as the NV30 will be the fastest thing when is ships. When was the the last time that a brand new flag ship card was not the fastest thing around, however fleeting? I love supporting the number 2 guy, and was impressed how ATI worked on there driver situation, so I will support ATI till they do something stupid. The demos look very impressive, as they should be (that bear demo was cool). So I have heard plenty about 9700, but what about the AIW version? I always wanted one but didn't like that it was slower. I know the last AIW was supposed to be just as fast as an 8500, but it was too little to late. So, any relitively hard facts on this latest AIW coming out?

I am sick of ppl saying how next Nvidia card will be faster...
Until it comes out no one knows that. I am just glad someone dethroned Nvidia, cause price drops will commence.

But, from the depths of the darkness comes out a new catalyst driver that shoots performance over the competition. I truly believe that the R300 still has a lot of untapped power. I can't wait until they unleash the beast.;)
