genaric case w/ 300watt power supply 39.95
AMD 1800+ xp retail 169.95
any old cheap cd rw 69.99

G_N_H, you may as well look at a med-range to (modern low-range). Cause even a 1 GHz Duron sys will kick the one you have in the butt.
If not what is above, you may want to look into something like this:
1 GHz Duron
MSI nForce Mobo w/ vid, lan, and sound
256MB DDR PC2100
40GB 7200RPM ATA/133 Maxtor Hard Drive
56k Modem
16x LiteOn DVD
24x CD-RW
MidTower ATX w/300W PSU
This system is almost identical to one I built my brother, and I did it under 600US Dollars. Not to mention it's a damn good machine. It does lack some future-proofness, but if you are just looking to forget your old sys, this one will do it.
You may also want to throw a better AGP Card in there with the money you save.:D Besides, you can upgrade this as needed. When you can afford to do so that is.
