Intel is FAR ahead, as far as technology works. It doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure that out. Have you seen the size of their plants? C'mon now... you think this gigantic corporation is going to let some little mini-sized plant located in germany take it over? lol... nope. Believe... Intel is the kind of poeple you dont even QUESTION!



Dont get me wrong... I like my AMD. It's fast and everything... but It doesnt have hyper-threading, lol :p

What makes you think this? You do realize that AMD’s new chip is basically just a heavily modified Athlon right?

Again, what makes you think Intel needs to do anything at all? To put that another way, what is it you think the A64/Opteron does so much better then Intel’s chips?

This is VERY unlikely. The Xeon is going to be the #1 selling server chip for the foreseeable future, Itanium, Power 4 and SPARC are going to fight a 3 way battle for top spot in high end servers.

AMD is going to continue to be locked out of the server market altogether if they do not get some Teir1 and Teir 2 vendors onside, and that don’t seem likely as they would have to take a huge cut in their profit margins to sell AMD based servers. This leaves AMD fighting it out with Xeon and P4 for the Teir 3/whitbox vendors, which are far and away the least profitable segment of the server market.

Why would consumers want “server processors”? They are typically slower, don’t overclock as well, more expensive, and not set up to run the type of applications most consumers want.

??? What “leap”? Intel was one of the last companies to the game with a 32-bit processor, and key futures like memory protection. Despite this it took another 15 years for 32-bit computing to catch on with consumers.

Where on earth did you here that? Centrino is an amazing chip. It has higher IPC then the Athlon, runs at respectable clock rates, produces overall performance not far off the top of the line desktop chips, and does all this using only a few Watts of power. It is far and away the best notebook chip available. Personally, I would love to have a passively cooled, fanless Centrino desktop for an every day (non-gaming) system.

This is completely irrelevant. For AMD to build a chip that clocked as high as the P4 (in an equivalent fab process of course) they would have to sacrifice per-clock performance as well. The mark of excellence for a processor isn’t performance per clock, it’s performance period, the clock rate used to achieve that performance is irrelevant.

As I said, it's totally pointless now.

I posted this thread after reading a lot about Athlon 64-bit processor and wanted to know what Intel has as its competition.

Oh well, I still like Intel because of their ground breaking "Pentium" processor. Though AMD seems to be gaining the high ground now.

The problem is that you started off with the assumption that AMD is about to take some big lead over Intel when it’s debatable whether they will even catch up. You then just expected people to accept that assumption even though you never gave them any reason for them to do so.

If all you want to know is what new technologies Intel has on their roadmap there was never any need to bring up AMD at all. If you want to know what Intel has to do to match the A64, the answer is they probably do not have to do anything since the P4 is already a more advanced chip then the A64 will be.

As a rough analogy, your question was the equivalent of saying, “Europe is way ahead of the US in the race to put a man on Mars, what doe the US have planned that will let them catch up?” The answer you would almost certainly receive is that Europe isn’t racing to put a man on Mars, and isn’t ahead if they are. It would be foolish to expect anyone to just accept that Europe is ahead in this “race” and start giving you details of the US space program.

Instead of complaining that people are not giving you the answer you want, why don’t you reformulate you question and re-evaluate why you currently believe what you do. If you do this you will get a much better picture of what people are trying to tell you, that is they disagree with the basic assumptions you are bringing to the discussion. In this case it is up to you to either re-evaluate those assumptions or present evidence to support them, but don’t become upset because people disagree with them.

BTW, if people had said you were stupid, I would have had no choice but to intervene, as that would be an AUP violation. What a lot of people said (some in a not particularly nice way…) was that you are wrong. It’s ok to be wrong and it’s ok to tell someone when he or she is wrong, otherwise it isn’t possible to have a meaningful discussion. This should not upset you.

after reading this thread i have to agree somewhat with wankey on this one. he just wanted to know how intel would reply to the mass chips AMD has been putting out. instead he got flamed.

unfortunately i do not have the answer but i begin a summer intern position monday with intel. ill be assisting in the chemical aspect of chips and hopefully i will get enough info to share with you guys on the future of intel. wankey for now you just have to go to both the intel and amd websites and look at the roadmaps. IMO, both intel and amd will seem to have somewhat of an "edge" over the another at any given time. ive learned from reading in this forum that posting "XXXXX company has an edge over XXX" will only get you flamed. its like saying to someone that their mother is hot. (ok bad analogy) but if you say to your friend that their mom is hot, they will argue with you and in turn say "no, your mom is hot" and this keeps going back and forth.

Thats bull...i agree that it sucks amd is using + rating system...but if they didn't 50% of the ignorant people out there buying computers would be like...well 3 ghz is the same price as a 2.2 ghz...im buying the 3 ghz. AMD knows this and would lose TONS of sales...The people that know better are the minority of the people buying the computers sooooooo...

I don't see that everyone has flamed / insulted you. If you don't appreciate some of the comments, then just put those who made them on ignore. As for what Intel 'has up their sleeve', well if the next die shrink to .09micron allows them to scale the same architecture up to 10GHz, that should keep them in the game for quite some time. The other issue I raise way back, and was reiterated in different forms, is the issue of software support. Even if AMD comes out with the 'ultimate' 64bit processor that Intel can't touch, it's not going to sell if there's no O/S and apps to go with it. How much better is the 64bit processor going to be running 32bit apps? The fact is, when Intel says 'This is the direction we're going' many jump on board. When AMD tries to innovate, many take a wait and see attitude.

He's running Windows 2003 Server, I don't think longhorn has been given a retail name yet. Windows 2003 Server is a Server OS, longhorn is for the desktop.

The lower cost Itanium's will come out later this year, not next year. Desktop is also technically a mis-classification for them. They will more likely find a place in workstations, the HPCC (high performance compute clusters) market, and high density 64-bit servers (i.e. blades and/or 1U). The biggest limiter for Itanium adoption in the workstation market will continue to be the lack of a low cost infrastructure and HP being the sole producer of a workstation chipset for it. It's a shame really, since Itanium has stellar floating point performance. Expect Madison to rock when it launches in a couple weeks.

Prescott is much more than Northwood with a 1M L2 and improved hyper-threading. There are many other internal features that will also be increased/improved, but they won't be features that show up in a marketing checklist. The real advance of Prescott will be allowing more of what Northwood started--a leap forward in clock frequency for another year. One of the primary drivers for that will be Intel's release of 90nm strained Si on the 300mm wafers that Northwood is already using.

I think AMD and Intel are generally about the same, they both have their good qualities and everything. I'm an AMD fan because they are pretty much less expensive and do about the same as similar p4's

It could be said that both companies have excellent engineers, and it surprises me everytime AMD releases a new chip. Considering the size and fiscal difference you have to give AMD credit for not only holding on, but for also trying to consistantly raise the bar. However, it should be noted that with the inlcusion of IBM into AMDs future design and production, they will be getting much more competitive. How many other industries have a little guy that constantly tries to beat on the monopoly, and gets away with it. We all know that with one phone call Intel could put AMD out of business, but I am sure the government would definitely come down hard on Intel for that.

What people fail to realize is that companies of this size (both Intel and AMD) are not stupid. AMD knows what Intel is making and vice versa, for the most part, they have intelligence years out. AMD knows about where performance wise Prescott will be in a year, and similarly Intel knows where the A64 will be in a year. This allows them to engineer and produce based on future predictions. So sure, Prescott may kick *** when it comes out, but I would expect AMD to have already accounted for that and to have a match for it. When AMD began working on the Opteron/A64 they knew how much time they had before the Athlon was going to be overtaken by the P4. Unfortunately delays prevented the release at the right time, and the result has been that for the last eight months or so AMD has not been as competitive as they would have liked.

In the end what we will find is that after this generation, if AMD makes it they will be a very different company. For the first time ever AMD is offering something that Intel is not. This moves them away from the Intel clone stigma and allows them to create a stronger brand name. Whatever the case, this split in architectures will be good for the industry. It is one thing to have competition based on the same core architecture, but it is much better to have competing architectures, there are more options there. This does lead to a problem though. Testing and benchmarking both sides fairly will become a bit more difficult as we move out of the clone generation.
