Just stay behind the curve, don't buy the fastest anything. Wait for it to be out for a little bit, and not top of the line. The comp I posted should play games pretty sweet for a while, then depending on whats new/worth it I could upgrade to a new generation Ati or nvidia thats not top of the line, and go for another 6 months. I usually try to keep my CPU updates to double the speed but thats becoming harder. Went from like a 15mhz or something to 200mhz, then to 500, then to 600, then to 1400, now to around 2300-2600. That means my next CPU upgrade will need to be 5.2 ghz. AMD better get on the ball.

and I may start getting jealous, but not for long. I'm just waiting for them to come out w/ the 800Mhz bus and 1MB cache (aswell as reg'd ecc pc3200 ddr) and possibly that lga interface. That seems maybe like a year or so away :).

Take all the software off and you can have it for 300 - 400 bucks.

Speaking of which.....

I always find it funny that software doesnt drop like a rock in price like hardware does... Even after there is an update available.. The older version is still quite expensive...

Such as MS Office 2000 vs. MS Office XP :)

But with hardware, its a whole different ball game!

probably partially due to piracy, and also because MS want to pimp their latest product on everyone, who would buy officexp if 2k costed half as much?

Old games and very old operating systems such as windows 95 or perhaps photoshop from 1996 may cost half as much

Ouch, that price really hurts considering I bought this system about 8 months ago (well, most of it, the DVD burner is new) for about twice that number! Errr.....
