Just be happy this isn't another Duke Nukem Forever.
This is obviously an NVIDIA conspiracy!
NVIDIA knew its Det 50's would be late, and they need them for decent performance in HL2. They slip Gabe and/or Vivendi some money, and presto! The HL2 benchmark is inexplicably delayed! The best part is, of course, that after Gabe's comments about NVIDIA, nobody would ever suspect NVIDIA of doing it!
Until now, that is. ;)

Hey anything is possible, just not probable. As much as Id like to see the Det 50s save nvidia on this one Im pretty sure it wont happen. And if thats the case nvidia is positive it wont. No use in delaying it.
It should still be on Blue's News' main page.Quote:

"Right now all we can say is holidays of this year, which to me feels really unfortunate. Our customers really want to know. They say, "Tell us what the date is going to be," and that's what they want to hear. They're fine with what the date is; they just want to know so they can plan accordingly.
"Right now it's for the holidays. I wish we had a clearer date to give people at this time."
Gabe Newell
"The previously announced September 30th release date for Half-Life 2 is being pushed back. We are currently targeting a holiday release, but do not have a specific "in-store" date to share at this time. We will release that information as soon as we have confirmed a new date."
Both of the above quotes I got from Blue's News (not original quotes...but that's where I got them from). These are the only two I found about the release date and I went all the way back until Friday, September 19, 2003. So where is the quote where Gabe Newell "admitted they were completely dishonest about the release date"?
edit - I also found another dated July 29, 2003. But all that said was Half-Life 2 was going to be delayed. Just wanted to add it since it also was on Blue's News.
Ithink the reason its late is that someone broke into their system and stole the HL2 source code. It means that they will probably be in the process of trying to clean their system at the moment.
By the way to anyone who belives this is fals, I just downloaded the source code from the newsgroups.
Well then you should probably delete it, as Gabe is on a crusade to stop this sh!t.
I understand that you probably have no intent to do anything with this code - but that's another reason why you shouldn't have it in the first place.
Be cool, and get rid of it.
This kind of thing just makes me sick - I just dont understand how some people (not you - the guy(s) who did this) could have such disrespect... And thanks to them, this game will get delayed further, as Valve will have to alter their source code to prevent as much hackery as possible....
It just sucks...

From the story on the Inq, it looks like someone opend an outlook email that had a keylogger program attached to it, the rest was history.
From a cursory look at the code this is the full source minus the artwork etc, 5 years of secrets down the drain for valve, plus licence revenu that they may have gotten.
Here's the key quote:
"We held back talking about our release date going into September 30 because I wanted to have a much clearer idea of what day we were going to ship on."
In other words, they knew they weren't going to make September 30. Vivendi was right and Valve's damage control was dishonest and unprofessional.
Damn right, teach them a lesson by not buying it when its released.
