Far Cry SS - NO 56K - Test your IQ Knowledge

Obviously ATI and nVidia's cards provide IQ that is close... and from what you said it sounds like you think someone who loves ATI's IQ would be able to look at a screenshot and say "that's an ATI card." No one on the planet (except maybe ATI developers) would be able to figure that out. That doesn't mean though that the difference is so minute no one would be able to tell nor care. If shown the differences, the user will notice it every time he/she plays (assuming it is noticeable).

I see what you were trying to show, and yes, the IQ is pretty close. I don't think there is anything wrong with doing a nitpicky, identical screenshot comparison though to see if nVidia's mixed mode really is as good as a fully DX9 compliant mode. The only thing I worry about is either set of drivers detecting a screenshot and generating a better image.

Whitman those pics are breathtaking.... OMG.

See that's what I'm talking about... OpStars pics looked okay, and no one knew what kind of card it was, but after seeing Whitman's pics, we know how much better it CAN look at can see and would notice the difference.

Post some high IQ pics OpStar, preferably in the same areas that whitman took a pic of.

Where'd you get those screen shots? They look very nice!

I run Far Cry at 1280x1024, 2XAA, with everything in the game set to MAX, and I get a very playable framerate - even on my "slow" machine ;).

I'd fogotten how good the game looks with max setting and eye candy enabled.:eek: I don't recall seeing this, perhaps I was too busy avoiding guards or something like that.:o Damn! Those screenshots are eye popping, may be I'll reinstall the game when my rig(s) are finally put together.;) :)

They're from the MP Beta, I would have used the SP Demo but AA doesn't work on ATi cards, plus I dont have the SP demo on my comp anymore. I would assume I'm violating the NDA somehow (not sure if I'm allowed to post SS's). Considering I can't get into the beta forums to ask (since Ubi.com is crap), I'll just have to see :eek:.

They shouldn't be to mad, it makes their game look good :D

It's lil wonder that I didn't see that scene when I was playing the SP demo. I was wondering how you could enable AA when I couldn't with my 9800Pro....now, I'm pretty sure I'd be getting the game as soon as it's out.:cool: :D

Personally, I dont see much of a difference from Normal and Paradise, maybe on a "brighter" map you can. If I get unlazy, Ill take some shots wtih my 5900NU. Its on a PC that cant do 1280x1024 res though, Id have to move it over here. :(

edit, these are resized .jpg's, so they dont look near as good as the originals. But they are about 900k each.. I didnt think anyone wanted to download 10megs of pics.

OpStar you make a VERY good point. ATi fanboys couldnt tell the difference so they blamed it on the details, priceless.

If you couldn't tell the difference between those screenshots, then you dont have to worry about it.

When you're playing a game, are you going to stop at a certain spot while you're being shot and examine it to make sure it looks better than another card's screenshot of that area? I don't think so.

You're all nitpicking pointlessly. "We need identical screenshots." lol

If you have to be shown a "difference" in IQ, it really isn't that different, is it?

I'm just sick and tired of everyone saying not to buy a 5900NU vs a 9700 Pro for "ps2.0 performance" (mine is about equal - but you know, I'll give you that) AND ATI'S SUPERIROR IQ.

I mean, after all, why judge IQ on a level different than what you play :o

I think I put it a little nicer... but that's basically what I was saying :-P.

Still, I see the point OpStar is trying to make. The problem is, we have to be meticulous when it comes to IQ, because if we let gfx card companies reduce IQ, then we aren't progressing and getting closer and closer to really feeling submerged into the game. All these little differences we notice add up to creating a more realistic experience.

Now I think OpStar should post some Hi-IQ comparisons to see if nVidia and ATI offer equal IQ!!!

Funny that mikey (<3) and a few other ATi enthusiasts thought one of my lowly 5900SE cards IQ was acceptable to be considered that of a 9800XT.

I mean honestly, if we compare grains of sand, I'm sure one 9800XT is better than the other :/

yes it is. E.g. let's say you play games with a TNT2 Viper and you live in a cave with no internet access. You think your card is awesome and the IQ is great. One day someone sits you down and shows you a 9800XT, and you SEE the difference in IQ.

See the probelm with your statement?? Simply because you have to be shown the difference, doesn't mean the difference ins't significant.

That I totally 100% agree with, but its a totally different arguement.

You guys are mistaking "TECHNOLOGICALLY BETTER IQ" AS "NOTICEABLE IQ THAT SHOULD MAKE YOU CHOOSE CARD A OVER CARD B".

BTW, I'll do HQ, 1600x1200 max settings screenshots later, both of the ultra and the xt IN THE SAME DAMN SPOT.

True, to an extent.

But YOU guys were guessing that one of my screenshots was off a 9800XT.

Unless you guys live in a cave with a TNT2...

or how about this...

A fake painting vs a real painting.

Sure, there are many differences between the real Mona Lisa and the varied fakes or replicas of the Mona Lisa in people's houses.

If a art buff was to walk by, I'm sure he'd notice a minute difference in the picture.

Hundreds of others could walk by and say "hey, look, its the Mona Lisa".

My point is that you can play Far Cry in mixed mode with 4xaa and 8xansio (all high quality - grrr) and it will be enjoyable, with very nice IQ on an nVidia product.

The main cause from this rant was I've been seeing waaaay too many people saying:

...with games like Far Cry coming out I don't know if I'd buy a 5900...

Like I said before, no one on earth (minus ATI developers) could look at a screenshot and say "that's an ATI card"

If IQ is so unimportant, than why don't you play all games at very low details??? Read my previous post about getting closer and closer to feeling "in the game."

Correction, I didn't guess. I didn't make a judgement because the screenshots were all too different.

You have to include ATI pics as well though. The nVidia card could be rendering them all much differently than an ATI card, but without seeing what an ATI card renders, we wouldn't know what it "could" look like.

You are entirely missing the point.

I UNDERSTAND that ATi has better AA implementation.

I UNDERSTAND AND ACCEPT THAT ATi IS BETTER AT PS 2.0/DX9.

My point is that if someone is choosing between a 9700 Pro and a 5900NU when upgrading, why do people say "with games like Far Cry coming out..."

Funny, I somehow doubt the person asking that question will have time to buy an ATi card, take identical screenshots, get out a magnifying glass, and compare.

At identical prices, fine buy ATi, but when teh nV card is cheaper, and yet people recommend the ATi card, I start to wonder.

Also: A lot of this has come up because since I've gotten my 9800XT except for 6xaa I don't see what all the fuss is about :/
